simple question about PCI USB soundcard

I know this is a basic question, but I don't know.

I have onboard sound on the motherboard (AC97) and the computer is an Athlon XP 1500 w/512 MB of RAM. If I bought a Tascam US-122 or an M-Audio Mobile Pre box, would this negate my need to get a PCI sound card?

I'm not looking to do professional recording, just some basic stuff through N-Track or similar.

Any help would be much appreciated!

You would be able to play everything through your usb soundcard. As I type this, I am listening to my mp3's using winamp and my Mobile pre USB hooked up to my stereo. When I want to, i just plug my guitar in, open n-track and I'm ready to go.
