So I'm pretty new to the idea of mixing down to my computer, but I've been trying it out. The first experiment was fairly successful but with one problem. I'm running my Tascam 488 into the back of my computer through the audio in plug. I'm recording onto CoolEdit Pro. I set everything up and play it a few times to get the mix right. I have the speakers at a normal volume, and everything sounds great. I record it onto CoolEdit. But when I look at the waveform, it's a huge block, and when I play it back, it's incredibly distorted. So after turning the master volume on the 8-track down and performing several tests, I get it so I can record without peaking or distorting. However, when I do this, I can barely hear it through the speakers while it's recording, even when they are turned all the way up (and these are not cheapo speakers). When I play it back after it's done recording, it sounds good at normal volumes. So I continue mixing down a few more songs, checking the mix at the first volume, then turning the 8-track master volume way down when I actually record it. This has pretty good results, no extra tape hiss or anything, but it's pretty inconvenient. So what do I need to turn down so I can check the levels and record at the same volume?

Try going into your software'smixer and turn up the output volume....
