Simple Monitor Question

I just got the omnistudio for xmas and i am currently using two pairs of really crappy headphones to monitor while my brother and I play. I found a pair of Mirage Speakers laying around my dad had for his office or something and I wanted to use them as monitors with the Omnistudio. They are not powered though and I guess need to be amplified. My main question is, do I need a good amplifier or can I get one for $60 at radioshack. Will this affect quality at all or no? thanks...

well, i will take that as a yes, it will affect sound...but how much, i have never done this before and i just want something to get very basic recordings, nothing fancy and i don't want to spend a lot of money
 
Sure, go ahead, just don't expect decent results.

Why not spend a little more money and get good used powered flat response monitors?
 
The problem with a 60 dollar Radio Shack amplifier is that it operates at a very high distortion level that will cloud the sound details that you desperately need to hear clearly in order to make and judge your music and mixes.

Amplifiers which run at a low distortion level are more expensive because it requires decent power supply designs and matching low distortion output transistors to reproduce the sound clearly, with full dynamics and no audible distortion.

The speakers you have are capable of reproducing a good sound quality as long as they are fed a clean signal to work with, which the Radio Shack bargain won't provide.

Look for a better amp or receiver that has decent distortion specs and has at least 30 watts per channel of clean power. Many models from Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer and other major brand names will give you decent quality power for around $200 and up.

Good quality powered monitors can cost far more then that.
