simple MIDI question for us122

Hey

just wondering...got this old (1990) model yamaha keyboard with MIDI ports. I wanna know, does the MIDI IN red light on the us122 light up whenever something is connected or only when signal comes through? (i have a feeling the MIDI ports on the keyboard are dead)

When something is connected.... the The keyboard has to be turned on though.
 
yeah the keyboard was on.

just realised something though, if i turn the keyboard on and off while its hooked up to the us122 via MIDI, the red MIDI light flashes and then goes out again. if i then try and play the keyboard the light does nothing.

but that at least should mean that the MIDI OUT on my keyboard isnt stuffed right?
