I was attempting to get my parents computer running faster because they are pack rats via computer... there is so much garbage on there. So i cleaned many things out.

I went to install Norton Anti Virus however when its about to take me to the install manager it just stops.

Also i tried to run the disk clean-up and that gets to three green bars and then just sits there.. i let it sit overnight and nothing happened.

Then i went into the defragmenter and when i hit the analyze button it does so, when it begins analyzing it greys out the "analyze" and "defragment" buttons like it should, however when it finishes analyzing the buttons are never ungreyed, therefore not letting me defrag it.

ANY IDEAS ON THESE PROBLEMS??

First thing I would do is check the drive for errors. Do that via the same tool menu that brings up the Defragmenter. It will probably say you need to schedule the check for next re-boot, just say yes and then re-boot.

It should go without saying that the very FIRST thing to do is bback up any important data, if possible - data files, favorites, stuff on the desktop. Burning to CDR / DVD or copying to a USB key are easy back-ups

is it the 'windows installer' thats hanging?

If so they have a poorly written trojan that is an installer... you will need to uninstall and reinstall the windows installer... because the trojan is using the installer and windows installer can only install one thing at a time... the trojan will never release it.

If you really are wanting to clean it out fresh (assuming the harddrive is functioning properly), you really should just go through the pain of a clean install of windows.

If your parents use the internet regularly you might have some kind of virus messing up your system. Since you say you tried to install an antivirus, I'm assuming you didn't have one before. Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and run a full scan. Also I recommend http://www.free-av.com/ antivirus over norton.

Like RWhite said, check the disk for errors first.
