I walk the line
I know they're designed and being used as instrument mics, but has anyone tried any of them for vocals?

Just curious.

The cardioids do not sound very good on vocals (at least on my voice). Kinda midrangey. Might be ok for certain effect-type vocals. The omnis might work ok, but I haven't tried them.

I just figured somebody would've tried it by now, but I haven't noticed any comments to that effect.

We'll see if I get more replies.

Thanks.

BTW Scrubs, your avatar has been reported to the Boston PD.

And to whomever just left me unsigned rep (Scrubs?)

you have to leave a pos or neg comment of some kind, because I'm color-blind and I can't tell if it's red or green. Come to think of it, I don't remember which one is good and which is bad. :o

Wasn't me. I sign mine.

I tried it with a MSH-1A, once.

So shall I take that to mean that you were less than impressed with those results?

I won't write it off for all vocals because you never know what might work.

I sold my old MSH-1A to my friend. He recorded a song with him on guitar and his mom singing. She's got a good voice and the recording sounded excellent. I never would have recommended the MSH for vocals until I heard that.

Although it really depends on your voice, and even then, I'm sure there are better vocal mics out there. But for $20 you can't really go wrong.

Next time I talk to him I'll ask for the MP3 and see if I can post it here. Not sure when that will be though.

vocals in the room

Hi,

I use a stereo pair of msh-1O mics. They record vocals in the room fine. For instance a guitarist and a vocalist singing into the room, record the room, guitars, vocals, and all. They're great for that.

I also put the windscreen on and sang through the little mics. They're omnis so no proximity effect. They're condensers so they're real sensitive. Maybe a foot away with a pop screen like you would treat an LDC.

If you are looking for a vocal mic to sing into you can get used AKG or EV vocal mics used in the $20 to $30 price range.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

Got any clips of that? I'd really like to hear it. To me, that would be a heckuva trick to pull off. Cool.

No, I wasn't looking for a cheap vocal mic, I was just curious. I like to ask stupid questions just because these are the kinds of things that cross my mind. :)

I dont want to steal this thread but if you dont mind me asking an MSH mic question...

Do you think the MSH 1K would work well for drum overheads. I'm interested in the MSH 1O but I have a really crappy room for drums. So I was thinking maybe the Cardioid response might help capture less of my room. But I'm not sure if the response would favor well towards overhead miking drums. If you could maybe send me a message or a quick post , I dont intend to steal the thread but I didnt want to make a new one. SORRY NOTCARDIO! :)

I figure I should at least try to chime in on the MSH mic for vocals. I think since the element is so small it might be hard to get a full body sound to the recording but I'm sure with a nice voice and some placement you could get a pleasing sound with it for sure. Good Luck NotCardio :)

No, I wouldn't use the cardioids for overheads. I track in a small bedroom (11x15 feet) and have used both the Naiant omnis and Behringer ECM8000 as overheads with decent results. Yes, you'll get a little more room, but drums are so loud that you're mostly getting the drums. I like the recorderman overhead setup in my room, too.

Sorry but

I hate it when you have to join something just to listen.

And Erockrazor, no prob. I'm not looking to use some on vocals, I was just curious like I said.

Hijack away. :)
