silkscreened blank cd-r or buy a inkjet cd printer?

should i pay for a small run (50 max) of silkscreen blank cdr or just buy a inkjet cd printer to do it myself...

oh yeah i just want white background with a full size pic in black...

with todays technology it would seem like you could just inkjet hi quality and then coat the top of the cd to get the glossy protective coating...

Any computer store should have the disks.

FWIW, I have the Epson Photo R220 printer, and it does a GREAT job with printing on CDs. For a more professional look, don't get the glossy white labeled CDs. Get the Verbatim (I think) silver ones. After the printer is done, the texture & sheen off of them look a lot more like what you'd get at the store.

Also.....the silver ones don't smudge as easily as the white ones.

that sucks about the white disks im wanting a white background and a black line drawing on it...

i have read about putting clearcoat on it to keep the ink protected ...

i also read somewhere that someone had gotten some silver bottomed cd-r that you couldnt tell from a pressed disk, id like to know where to get those!...

oh yeah and do these white/silver disks have any markings on the upside?
 
I am interested in that LightScribe tech... what is the best quality drive for that? Are they all both DVD and CD writers?
 
I use an Epson R200 ($90) with Taiyo-Yuden white inkjet-printable disks - both CD-Rs and DVDs- from supermediastore.com (I think about 30cents each).

Super results.
 
how much is ink, how many can you print before you need more ink

By the way, you will not find anyone willing to screen print only 50 CDs. Usually start at runs of 500. If you knew the process, you would understand how big a pain it would be to setup the screens and inks for only 50 discs.
The Epson idea is not bad if you don't mind the water-solubility (unless you are brave enough to spray laquer on them). Lightscribe is just a novelty really for people just needing to label like 1 disc per day. Takes a really long time to burn the image, and the discs are expensive I think.

I do the exact same thing! Same printer...same store...never had a problem. If you let the ink dry properly, you shouldn't have the smudging problem.

Just for your info though - I wouldn't go spraying any kind of coating on the CDs as spray has a tendency to go where you don't want it to: i.e., the reading side of the CD. And buying a machine that seals the CD with a covering is expensive!! If you want to look expensive, then you have to go expensive. If you want good results with minimum of finances, then printable CDs (white or silver) is the way to go. You can get all the supplies - including silver/silver or white/silver discs at supermediastore.com. The ink for the Epson printer is available there also for about $20 (as opposed to Epsons price of around $80). The ink should last about 100 CDs or so.
 
thanks guys yeah i bought one of the r200 bout 10 min ago... with an extra ink cartrige... and some white true silver quickdry disks ... should work pretty good but if not i can always just buy a different brand,,,

its justa black line drawing going on the diskface anyway...

do you guys think the r220 can handle doing 500 cds. or what should i do.
 
Probably. Can you handle feeding all of them through?

They are kind of disposable. I know a guy that says he just buys a whole new printer when the one he has runs out of ink. The printer with ink is like $90 and the ink alone is like $80! Although I'm thinking he should shop around on the ink....

ok, i guess i missed something in the previous remarks - but this shit just sounds frikkin crazy!!! buyin a new printer when the ink runs out? dammm shop around like a maaphucka first--pahleeze!!!!
 
I know. He may not do it every time, but he said it is worth it to not have to deal with a printer messing up some CDs when it goes on the fritz after 500 discs or whatever.
 
I'd get someone else to do 'em: Modern CD does a great job. They do small runs. And they'll accept your own artwork in Photoshop (and other) format(s). They'll even e-mail you the templates for your photo editor. The best part is if they screw up they have to fix it - if you screw up you burn for every mistake.
