Sigh... Tascam M-30 Post.

Allright, I've been here before, but dangit I don't get enough time to do my musical/studio pursuits. So I have a stooooopid question, but I need an answer if it's out there:

I need to record something into my PC software app (Cool Edit Pro), and I want to use my Tascam M-30 to do it. I have the Direct Out from Ch 1 going to a soundcard breakout-box, to the software, back out the b-out-box into the Submix In on thte back of the M-30. then I have the Monitor Out jack connected to a stereo, which powers a pair of decrepit EV MS-802 monitors- so I have a monitoring path going on- from the software...

...but I can get no signal to the headphones, which is going to be important as I record (voice, mostly).

I know my system's signal-flow, aside from the M-30. What I need is 1) a lesson on how to use this thing, and 2) a manual. I will have to get a manual from the Tascam people I guess- but meanwhile, do any of you M-30 experts have a moment to spare for this loser who's trying to make a go of a budding career in internet radio?! :p A short walk-through on how to go in and out of this thing would be great! I seem to be confused on the signal-flow of it- there is some nomenclature I'm not getting.

Thanks for your time- and in return for your help I'll play an mp3 of your music on my radio hour! I'm going to be having a short music segment, and I have the liberty to do pretty much whatever I want to. It's going to be on live365.com... the "Dr. Roger Radio Hour". :)

I'd say patch the output of the soundcard to the Tape Rtn jacks on the M30, and bring the live tracks up with the cue tracks in the Submix section for overdubbing (or even mixing). The Monitor section you're accustomed to for cue is the Submix section on the M-30.

The Monitor section then becomes an aux send or way to monitor exclusively what's going on in the Main Mix section, the buss outputs and down to tape, (which doesn't include cue tracks). However, if you're using the Direct Outs, you'd still need to assign the input to a buss to monitor it in isolation thru the Monitor section.

You have to think of the Submix section as the Traffic Monitor section & cue monitor on the M30. The Monitor section is to monitor the busses, exclusively. For any two-way flow of signal, like live and cue tracks when overdubbing, you have to be operationally based in the Submix section,... while using the Main Mix section for (mic/inst) inputs and the Tape Rtn setting in the Submix for cue mix.

When mixing down, set the Submix to Input and the the Main input to "RMX", which is code for remix or tape return. In this case, you're using the submix section and some switch changes to bring the tape in the top of the Main input, thru the board and mixed to stereo in the Submix section.

I think for up to 4-track simul recording, there's an advantage to using the buss assign method, assigning the buss outputs to the tape ('puter) inputs.

Using the Direct Outs to the 'puter is a functional setup, and it's a must for >4-track simul recording, (with the M30 being 4-buss).

The slick thing about the M30 is that thru the versatile Submix section, e'thing about the comings and goings of the signals of the mix can be reconfigured with the flip of a switch.

It begs the issue of how many simultaneous inputs your sound i'face supports or that you'll be recording, but my advice is the same no matter what the number. Bring the 'puter's output signal into the M30 thru the Tape Rtn inputs, then bring the whole cue mix up in the Submix section.

Dave, when you mention Tape Rtn on the M-30, are you referring to the Tape In jacks at the Channel Inputs on the back panel?
