I just bought a shure pg57 mic for recording vocals cuz it was the best deal on a real mic in the shop I go to regularly ....I have a presonus firebox interface and Adobe Audition 3....Should I switch it up? Get something different? Keep the PG57 for something else or just use it ?

Exactly what part of this question has ANYTHING to with guitars and basses aside from the fact that you bought an instrument mic for vocals?

You DO realize that there is a whole forum for microphones right?

Haha, take it easy man, he's new. You're apparently still mad at the Dad in law :D

:laughings::laughings:

Nah, that was just blatant ignorance... If someone can read "guitars and basses" then they can read "microphones".
I'm just pointing out that maybe the "microphone" forum was possibly a better place for this question.

I do apologize for my rudeness though. :(

Damn!

Did I just get a virtual punch in the face by my sister?? Sorry thought I was in the home recording sec. Anyway I just started with this whole recording thing....forgot to mention that that pg57 is the only mic I have...I dont even know the diff. sm and pg? Got a Marshall 30w mg series, a 91 gibson m111, and a schecter bass w/ no amp and wanna record some tunes with adobe audition 3....help me out..

Does that happen a lot?

You want help? Pay attention.
That is the best help you could ever want.
And take that any way you want. You could use that little tid bit of advice positively or negatively. Your choice.

Oh, and welcome to home recording!

you can't record vocals with a dynamic mic. you need to save your pennies and buy any condenser mic. You can make a really good instrumental recording with a 57 only. But you add a vocal track recorded with one and it sounds like you recorded it in your basement.

At least that is my experience.

A lot of people will say you can only get a nice vocal recording from a condenser. And for the most part that's correct. It's more a matter of opinion though. Definitely, condensers are better for vocals, but i've gotten some really great results from an sm58 too. And since you're just starting out, i think you'll like the sound of a 58 if everything else is done properly. Other than that, the major questions are
a. what do you plan on recording?
b. what's your budget?

Btw, do you know the difference between a condenser and a dynamic mic?

Only about $50, so why screw around? :D

57s and 58s sound like shit on vocals. they'll make an otherwise decent recording sound like your friend recorded it.

Haha, i'm quite sure you know the difference between a dynamic and a condenser :) I was asking presto. I'm kinda surprised you think those mics sound like shit. I agree, the "legendary vocal mic" is a stretch, but i think it definitely is a pretty good mic.

I am just a scorned lover.

I have used 58s, and a 55sh live for years and i played my last 2 gigs with a 57. I love how you can get right up on the capsule. I love how it sounds through the PA and monitors. I freaking love that mic. And since it was only used as an amp mic for 15 years, it didn't smell like halitosis like my 55 and 58.

But I had tried to record with them for many years and have lots of shitty recordings that made me think I couldn't sing for shit. I bought a totally cheap perception condenser and a preamp and it made a huge difference.

So, whenever someone wants to record vocals with a 57, I say "she's a f*cking dried up old whore. Stay away!!!" :D

Ok, before you spend another dime it would help if you figured out exactly what it is that you're doing first.

Read the links on this page... I know it's ALOT of reading but you will come out of it much much much smarter and it is definitely worth it.

It depends on the material; whether A dynamic will work for vocals. If you do cookie monster vocals, use anything,if you actually sing, get a condenser.

I don't think an SM58 is ideal for "recording" vocals

Can't remember where I heard it, But I remember hearing that all of Bono's vocals (from U2) are recorded with an SM58.

... I passionately hate bono.
