Hey, you guys porbably get this all the time, but please answer.

My band is going to buy an 8 track and some mics to record with. I have pro tools, so we are set there. What I want to know is, which mic. We are a hard rock band. It ranges from metal to pearl jam. We're going to need to mic guitars, vocals, and piano for one or two tracks. The singing is screamer style, and the guitars are pretty distorted. I was thinking either the Shure SM57 or SM58, or maybe a Sennheiser of comprable quality (I don't know which one). We're looking to spend no more than 125 or so dollars. It doesn't need to be perfect, we just want something that will get good quality on guitars and vocals. Thanks a lot.

Are you going to mic up the drumset with one mic?

You'll need at least three for that, two overheads and a kick drum mic.

Everything else can be done one at a time. Maybe a 57 or a SP B1?

1) Goto the Newbies sections and/or http://www.hr-faq.org to learn. As far as what mic - (currently) it doesnt make any difference what you use because you dont know what you are doing. As such, it isnt going to sound too different from one mic to the next. So read up, and then make an educated purchase (or two or three or four)
2) If you are not concerned how this sounds in the end and dont feel like reading - buy a SM57 because you will prolly end up using it in the future if you continue on.
