when it comes to choosing a mic. for acoustic guitar----is there a difference between these two??

Yes there is. In my experience the KSM is a bit brighter sounding. Its kind of more of a flattering mic which can be a great thing, or could also be a little much, but that really depends on the source signal, the preamp, and what your own ears enjoy. The sm81 is much more "neutral" sounding to me. It captures more of what is really there and doesn't do anything to help you out much. In the end, which mic to use really depends on a combination of other factors.

Any more insight on this topic? I'm considering an SM81 pair mainly for drum overheads, but would like a better understanding of how the KSM137 relates. Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried the KSM, but the SM81 is a very good overhead mic. If your kit sounds good. They deliver a very true sound of what you got.

Yep - like everyone else wrote, the SM-81 is what you want if you want an accurate, non-hyped mic. The KSM-137 has a punched-up top end. Try them both out and decide which is the best fit for you. For me, I've come to depend upon my pair of SM-81's.
