Hi, apologies if this is a real newbie question or has been covered elsewhere but I couldn't see anything in the Sticky topic or through a search.

My Shure SM58 likes to cut out - I've not experienced it when singing, but if it's left dormant for a minute or so, it sometimes does. I don't think it's the lead, because if I lightly tap it a couple of times it to comes back to life (as if it's been on standby mode). Any ideas?

Thanks
Rob

If it's still under warranty bring it back.
If not it's a real bugger to work on and sounds as if there is something amiss internally.
Other than that are the set screws on the lead side nice and tight? Be careful reverse threads there!

could still be the lead. A light tapping MIGHT be enough to jiggle whatever's not connecting in there.
I'd try two things first off.
1. Try a different cable.
2. Try some contact cleaner and make sure those pins aren't corroded and failing to make a good connection

Thanks very much for the advice both. I tried the same cable with a different mike and a different cable with the same mike and the problems continued with both variables. I'm hoping that I have two broken cables...I will get a new one and see where I am for there!

Wait a min. ~ what have you got this microphone plugged into?
Sounds as if the problem may be there.

Thanks moresound. It's plugged into my yamaha 4-track. I've had it years and I don't remember it doing this in the past (though that doesn't mean it didn't). You think it may cut out when there's no signal coming through or something?

Possibly ..... do you have a live rig to put your 58 through to confirm that it's the microphone or not? Maybe a friend has a PA or something.

Try the other inputs on the board if you only have problems with the one channel then its pretty obvious. If is all the channels it could be a ribbon cable in the 4 track or the mic. If its the mic, I think that Shure will repair almost any of their mics for $50.

Thanks v much both of you. I've got a guitar amp that I can jack it into to test out. I'm thinking I've probably tested it out on two knackered leads so far though, so I'll buy a new one and see if that solves the issue. Shure are fairly hardwearing aren't they and it's had nothing that should have caused damage
