Hi.
I need some guidance on whether or not its worth buying the Shure PGDMK6 drum mic package. I have a sm57 which i will use for the snare but apart from that, if i buy it, i will use all the other mics!!
Can you please give some feedback on whether these are good mics for recording!
And if there are any better mic packages (or single mics put together to make one) for around my $300-$400 budget?
Thanks :D

Dont get the PG set. You will just end up selling it on ebay in a year for a third of what you got it for.

Use the 57 you have for the snare.

Get a set of Joe Meeks JM27 for $90.00 USD shipped for O/H

I use a Superlux PRA-218b for the kick $95.00 USD shipped

Get tom mics when you get some extra cash.

You can get some great sounding drums with 3 or 4 mics.

fair enough. Whats wrong with them? Sorry about all the q's im not sure on what makes a good drum mic and i havnt tested many out :o

If you need or want tom mics I would give these a shot over the shure PG's

A lot of members of this BBS seem to like them and not many like the PG mics.

The PG's are cheapest mics that shure makes.
After you listen to some other mics I am shure you will agree.

Most of the time when I record drums I use 3 or 4 mics. 2 o/h kick and snare.
I recommend you go with 4 mics and buy some new drum heads.
If the drums sound like crap your recording will sound like crap

Don't buy any mics based on the price.

yer i wasnt going to go just on the price i was just wondering why they wernt any good. My drums dont sound like crap and the heads are good so i think it will record well. Thanks! :)

I'll have to strongly disagree . A pg56 sounds pretty much the same as a 57 on a snare. The PG81's are pretty desent too . Your talking about $300.00 compared to about $2400.00 for the beta and SM versions that these mic's are fasioned after .

One SM 81 costs more then the whole PG 6 pack . Not to mention the mounts and cables that come with it .

Suck is a pretty strong statement for an entry level set made by one of the top mic mfg's .

The Audix F 15 , now that's a small condenser that sucks for the $400.00 5 pack it comes in with no mounts and cables .

I ment to say they really suck.

Shure may be one the top producers of mics but they still make some junk....ie anything with a pg.

I'm sorry to disagree here.
I know the PG line is not top notch, but it does it's job perfectly.
I have a PG52. I use it for my kick. A friend of mine has the Beta52. I borrowed it for a week, and tested around. The differences in sound were not "that" big, proving the PG is a fair competitor.
I'm not a pro, I don't live from music, I just love drumming & recording, so this line of mics is designed specifically for people like me, who wants to get a decent sound, for less money than the top lines.
I also have a shure prologue pencil condenser (this line was their entry level some years ago) and it sounds good too.
The fact that PG's don't sound quite like Beta's or SM's, doesn't mean they suck.
Just my opinion.
Cheers!

I always like the AKG D112 on the kick, and you can get it used on eBay for around 120 or so. I sold the Beta 52a I had, I liked the AKG much better. I had one shure PG56 at one point and thought it was good, much better than the audix fusion mic set. As far as introductory mics, they are decent, better than the audix ones at least.

You are better off putting together a good used mic package consisting of SM57's and a SM81. For 4 sm57s, 1 sm81, and a akg d112 it would probably come out around 500 or so, maybe a bit more, not too far above your price point. I think you would be more happy with the results too.
