Whats your opinion of them if you've got/used one? I was looking through the music store today and noticed them near the 57's. Perhaps they're a cheaper alternative? Not sure, so I'd like to know what your experiences are!

Cheers! :)

ive used a PG58 and it sucked. i will go on a limb and assume that maybe the PG57 sucks too.

Hey, I'd agree that the PG58 sucks all around - it's a garbage microphone. - However, I bought that little PG drumkit set a few years back, and the kick mic is actually usable in live situations, as are the overheads...and the three "tom mics" are ok for snare and high toms live.

I'd never record with any of them, though - I'd say that the PG57 is probably passable for micing guitar amps live - and probably not passable for recording anything...

I generally only bring out the PGs if I'm running sound for a metal band...so their drummer won't beat any nice microphones to death...

Thanks a lot for your replies! Looks like I'm going to be spending a little more for a sm57 but it will be worth it! Thanks a lot :)

do it! you won't regret it. if you buy the PG, you're just gonna end up wanting the SM later, so better to just save the trouble and get the SM57. that's definitely a good mic.

Yep. I was looking through the store today and saw it, so I thought I'd best ask around to see if it's rated. Thanks for helping me not make the mistake of buying a shitty mic :P

you're welcome. well, there's my good deed for 2008.

What are you gonna use the sm57 for, Creep? They're always good mics to have around, no doubt, because they can be used for almost...anything, heh...just wondering if there's something specific you plan to use it on - as you might even find suggestions of better values for mics for that purpose, ya know?

Yep, fo' sho'. I'm probably just going to use it for electric guitar, bass, and some acoustic guitar. Nothing out of the ordinary really. :) Should work fine, right?

Well...bass is one of the few things I would never recommend using a 57 for, really. I'd recommend just running bass direct in like everyone else does, heh...unless you have some incredible sounding bass-amp and some incredible sounding mics for bass-amps.

For electric guitar, I'd say the Sennheiser e906 is about 10,000 times better than a 57 - but it is about twice as much $...

The Sennheiser e609 is only a little bit more expensive and I'd say it's about 50 times better than a 57 for electric guitar - and about 500 times better for acoustic...check them out...they are totally worth the extra 10 bucks - seriously.

If my opinion doesn't mean much to you - how's this: Every national, major-label act I've ever run sound for has brought their own e609 or e906 mics for their guitars (even though I have my own 906 mics, those kinda bands just bring all their own stuff).... Every last one of them, I shit you not.

Cheers mate. I'll look into it! :)

Might actually just run the bass directly in too, never really occurred to me, because I tried it once with my guitar and well... let's just say it was a learning experience.

:D Yea, electric guitars are nasty sounding instruments until they hit a guitar amp, lmao...bass guitars, however - are not like that. Guitar amps magically make electric guitars, which sound horrible by themselves, sound fantastic. Bass amps just make bass guitars really loud - they don't really alter the sound of the instrument - which is why running bass direct in works just fine, but electric guitars need to be amped and mic'd.

Ah, sick. That's a help :)

Also, has anyone ever used a Behringer C2 Condenser? And what would they be good for? I'm just searching through mic's and seeing if people have used them. :)

Damn, man... I've never even heard of those until now - you can get a pair of them from Amazon for $49 - wow.

Small diaphragm condensers like that are used for all kinds of stuff - the most common use for them is probably drum overheads. They are generally not used for vocals or close-micing on drums or guitar amps. I'd be willing to bet that those mics sound like shit with a painfully harsh high end - that's been my experience with other cheap condenser mics....but I've never heard them, so...maybe somebody else has.

You might wanna start a new thread with the title Behringer C2 to get the attention of people who have used them...

Ah, no worries, will do. I'm just sorting through all these mic's on the net... I really want an ES 57 but I don't think they sell them here in Australia, because they're not in any of my local music stores. :(

Yea, that's cool...well, the cheapest condensor that I actually use to record with sometimes is the Audix F15 - it has a weird, sparkly yet fuzzy color to it that is really, really nice on certain cymbals, and even on some guitar amps (in combination with a Sennheiser e906, of course)...

If I could go back in time and pick my very first microphone again - it'd be the SM7 - hands down. That's one of the best damn microphones there is...it's crazy that it can be had for $300 - $350.

Ah heaps cool. Thanks a lot TyphoidHippo for your help mate. I'll keep looking around, and if all else fails I'll just treat myself to a brand new SM57 :)

Yup! Stay away from the cheap berrys though, pick up a pair of naiant sdc's and thank me later....

i dunno, i've seen a lot of big-time bands mic their cabs with 57's

i've also seen some fairly big names using senn. 421's and AT 3035's...to say that all the big guys use the 609/906 is definitely making a bullshit generalization - although i can see why it'd be popular for live use because of they manner in which they can be placed

and about the PG57...i used once, to record vocals for a punk band. probably the only thing i would ever use it for, because it made the vox come out sounding perfectly shitty

Well.... I wouldn't say that all the big guys use them for everything - that would definitely be a bullshit generalization, I agree - just that all the big guys I've run live sound for have brought them - it may just be a coincidence, but....whatever.

LMAO!!
