For the budget guy (such as myself) with Behringer or similar pres, the '57 just sounds so ... well, shoeboxy!!

When I get my first Neve I'll come back and give you my new opinion ;) :rolleyes: :p


So is it the sm57 that sounds bad? Or is it really the Behringer! :D

with at least 4 vital steps prior to the snare mic itself, solve those problems first and I garuantee the 57 will be just fine on it!...you are not gonna get that coveted snare drum sound with any mic if all your trying to do is get it from close mic'ing!

Bobalou is right. However, when you get into recording aggressive and heavy rock bands, the close mics bump WAY up in priority. When drummers start to play that loudly, you start using a little less and less overheads and room mic because if you don't the cymbals will stay way out there. At this point gates on your toms becomes very important as well. Also, with this style, room sounds seem to be a little less critical as well. Not that the overheads and room aren't important, but the priority can be cahnged to: well tuned good sounding snare, close mic, overheads, room sound.
 
Many times when I work with heavy rock bands... when I mic the top of the snare... I place the mic about an inch in from the rim and pointed straight down at the head and almost touching the head. Top of snare for "wack" with bottom of snare for "snare" and with OH and RM for "tone".
 
I think you're right ... but until I get some decent pres I'm gonna stick to making my own samples and programming ... it sucks, but not as much as my kit recordings ;)
