are they worth it at all?..how do they compare to the ones they try to duplicate? I was looking at the pg52 bass drum mic instead of spending the extra $80 or so on the beta 52. I was also thinkin of possibly gettin the whole pg series drum mic kit, and then getting some decent overheads. Tell me what you think about idea that for a little project studio.

Don't know about the 52 in particular. I have a PG58 in my arsenal. Don't think much of it, but then I don't think much of the SM58, either. I think pretty much all the recent Shure dynamics that I've used sound a bit too tubby, with too much proximity effect and a generally muddy sound when used up close (for vocals), and not enough warmth to use for miking instruments at a distance. But that's probably just me.

Anyway, I haven't compared the PG58 to an SM58 side-by-side, but the sound of the PG reminded me a lot of the SM58, and the manufacturer's response curves look surprisingly close as well, though I'm sure that doesn't tell the whole story.

That said, with any mic purchase, it comes down to personal preference. If you can, you should try one out in a music store and see what you think. :)
