Hey guys,
just wondering what shure PG 81's are like for over-head cymbals....i know the SM 81's are prolly a better choice, but im a little strapped for cash trying to save for a BOSS BR 1600...Thanks.

If you're looking for something like the 81's then save yourself the headache and save yourself the money in the long run....and just save up for the SM81's. Sure you can go ahead and buy the PG81's.....they work....but it will be very little time at all before you're out shopping for overheads again. Just remember the whole idea that buying cheap the first time doesn't really save you any money if you decide later that you need to upgrade. Sometimes that is necessary, but it isn't efficient.

I have a pair of SM81's and have been thoroughly impressed by their competency on pretty much everything I've stuck them in front of. The PG81's, on the other hand, have never impressed me at all...they're not even in the same ballpark as the SM81's.

I've used the ksm109's many many times for overheads and I think they sound great, and at half the price they make a nice alternative to the sm81's.

The SM81 is one of my favorite small condensor mics for overheads, acoustic, HH and other applications, where a bright mic is needed. Don't settle for second best. Go for the SM81.
