If you had to choose between the two brands for overhead or stereo Acoustic guitar, Which would you choose? Also, is one more versatile than the other?

thanks

IMNSHO, about anything would be preferable to the C1000s. If you are looking at a pair of SD mics priced around $300 each (which I believe is street for the Shures), you have a wide range of choices available to you, especially if you are willing to shop used.

In that price range I like the Audio Technica AT4051 (used) and the Audio Technica AE5100 (new). Oktavas (from the Sound Room) should certainly be considered. For a little more money, I'd very strongly consider the Beyer MC930 (I beleive you can get a new matched pair for $690 at Full Compass if you call). You could get a matched pair of Josephson C42s for @ $700 (used). People here have spoken well of the Peluso mics as well, although I've never used them. I've not used that particular Shure mics, but maybe someone else here that has an can comment. From my experience with other Shure microphones in the KSM line, I'd expect the KSM 137 to be a very decent microphone.

good answer, we'll play!

Thanks! I've got a line on a used pair of KSM 137's (used on one project) for $450. Seems like a decent deal.

Pohaku has some good suggestions here. Persoanlly, I too would avoid the AKG C1000's. The KSM Series of Shure mics are pretty nice. I definately prefer them (for most recordings) to the sm81's. The josepphsons and Beyer's are also nice mics. In my opinion they are a nice little step up from the KSM's. The peluso's as well are also very nice mics and in that same class. They can be had for a little over $600 for a stereo matched pair, and a little less for an unmatched pair. That being said, $450 for a pair of KSM 137's still seems like a good value. The peluso matched pair however also comes with shockmounts and a case for the pair and has different capsules available to further their uses.

Pohaku & Xstatic,
Thanks for the suggestions. I bought the stereo pair of Shure KSM 137s for $400. I just checked them out by micing a 2x12 bass amp and recording into a Firepod using Sonar Producer 6 and both sounded, IMHO, exactly like what I was hearing live. I didn't buy them to record bass. It was more of a test to make sure they functioned correctly (pads, rolloffs, etc.). I can't wait to try them on Acoustic guitar/ overheads as planned
