MF is selling these for $179

Searches of the Mic Forum have yielded very few results.

Are they good for anything?

I need a mic for mandolin, acoustic guitar, drum overheads, etc.

I've been using a pair of these for drum OH's for about a year now. No complaints. I think they're a nice pair of mics. Also used em for micing acoustic guitar. They seem to do a pretty decent job. But I'm no pro. ;)
Hope it helps..............

Thanks...

I would like something that is a step up from a 603, and a step down from a Neumann KM184.

I have the 141s, if they sound anything like those it's a great mic. My SM81s have gotten rather lonely as a result.

I have finally gottne what I can afford in my studio setup.

I record mostly acoustic instruments (guitar, banjo, mandolin) and my pair of Shure KSM-109's do a good job for me. I have completed a CD of 12 songs and for the time and money and I put in , I am satisfied.

I will probably upgrade the mics at some point, but for now I am happy.

Here is a confession. I ponied up the cash for an SM81 (bought used from EBAY) but honest-to-goodness did not like the sound when compared to the KSM109. Granted, I am a very inexperienced home recording person, but I had to go with what sounded the best to my ears.

I sold the SM81 and used the money to buy another used KSM109 and a Focusrite Trakmaster Pro to run my AT3035 through (for vocals)

I'm happy with them.

I use mine on acoustic guitar and it sounds great. I havent got to use them as overheads cause i only have one, but i plan on buying another soon, becasue i am impressed with the quality of it for only $180.

I own a pair and I love them. The 109's are great all around mics, I'm convinced shure just makes kicks ass mics. IMO you can't go wrong with 109's.

I have found the KSM109's to be a bit muddy on acoustic instruments, but have been very happy with it on percussion and overhead. Someone mentioned the Crown CM700, and I like this mic much more on acoustic instruments. As for the KSM 137 and KSM141, these are very different sounding mics. The 137 is much cleaner and more open sounding, and the 141 is also multi-pattern. There is nothing wrong with the 109, but it is not my first choice for acoustic instruments.

Cheers,
Zach

The Shure KSM line of small diaphragm mics is pretty nice. The 109 is a little hyped up top, but still fairly smooth. The other ones though definately open up a bit more. I still like the sm81's also though. They are more of a "true" and "natural" sounding mic. They don't do anything to make your track "shine", but just sort of capture it how it is (which more often than not is not necessarily a good thing).
