Hi this is my first post, I just want to know if anyone has KSM 27's and had any issues or noticed difference's between them ? I had 2 of theses used them for OH on drums sounded fine, a bit of gain difference but mic's were both clean. Noticed when I started using it on vocals that 1 of them was just not as full sounding and the signal difference between them on the same mic line was very noticeable. So I bought another (used obviously, but in studio very lightly, great shape, looked like the shock-mount hadn't bee out of the box) hooked it up and same thing compared it A/B with the same one that sounded better in my first A/B comparison and same result the "new" one sounded thinner and had lower signal on the meters. I like them and they are found reasonably cheap for a large diaphragm condenser and the thinner ones don't even really sound bad with a bit of extra gain, so my question is I guess, are there known issues with these and if so are they fixable and in opinion worth fixing? Thanks

Are the padding and roll-off switches in the same position?

I've got a couple of these and I had to send one out to Shure to be fixed. It was a grounding issue that resulted in a buzz that I couldn't fix it myself - not the same issue you are having though.

I'd contact Shure and see about their repair policy. Might be free or at least cheap. Can you return it to the seller?

yes they are, it is strange because 2 are the same sounding as i said and all 3 were bought from different places......,
Thanks for the reply

no i cant return them, i think i will contact shure, it is really strange that the 2 are so different from the other all purchased separately. Thanks for the reply

But you purchased them new - right?
no i did not purchase them new they are used but how can they both sound the same when compared to my "good " one did they make theses and change the specs at some point ? As i said they both sound good and are very similar to the "good " one when given a bit of extra gain.

It can and will happen. A lot of my 58's and 57's have their own sonic signature.

Shure are generally pretty good about consistency but there are lots of things that can happen to condenser mics to change the sound. For example, spending too much time in a location with high humidity can definitely affect the frequency response. Otherwise, just standard knocks and bumps can also gradually change things.

Small electrets rather than LDCs I know, but the average life of a headworn lav on a West End or Broadway show is measured in weeks because of the exposure to sweat.

If it is anything like that then contact with Shure is your only hope.
