...This may very well have been the worste mic I have ever heard. I know it's a thing to say "Well there are no bad mics, just some are better for certain applications." Well, I was recording a punk band and the vocalist had just come from guitar center to buy a new mic for their live shows. He wanted to here the mics in comparison (he was told it was the same as sn SM58 on the inside...). We set it up and I think most of you will agree that the 57/58 sounds pretty "dark" in comparison to say most LDC, well the 55 was like muddy ass. It sounded like the guy was singing in a barrel or something. It was NOTHING like my 57 and definatly nothing like my AKG perception 200 (which I recommend, actually).

If you have had experience with the 55, tell me what it was like. I had hoped his new mic would sound good for him, but it was complete shite, so let me know if the "in a barrel" sound if a fluke, and the mic actually doesn't have that bad of a quality to it.

Thanks

Ive heard about the same as a SM57 myself...great Karaoke mic though. :)

It is the same capsule, but mounted on a fairly sizeable plate, and with more padding than a 58 has. The response is therefore different. I prefer the 55 myself, but as always opinions and voices vary.

Remove the foam inside and see it you like that better. Otherwise try a different mic.

I have to disagree with that--the 57 is a terrible karaoke mic. Little protection from plosives and more importantly, spittle getting in the capsule :eek:

eh;
never heard a reissue 55.

I have a real one though. I've made some pretty amazing recordings with it. It might even be the best bass drum mic I have.

i use the SM55 live and its pretty fair with my voice....

goes without saying though that some voices will work with it while others do not....

what is your signal chain?

Mackie onyx pre, firewired into adobe audition. My monitors are KRK Rok-it 6s. I took the foam out and it did yeild some better results, but definatly not my favorite.
