Hello all,

New to this board but not new to mics. I have this Shure 55 which I've never used. I've read it's basically the SM57 guts in the cool retro housing.

I haven;t used it because it didn't seem to have any gain and was told I needed a cloudlifter. Yet, every video I find online of people demo'ing the thing, nobody mentions any need for power or any mention of a cloudlifter.

Oddly, I've googled the hell out of it and not found any reference to it.

Does anyone know about this mic?

Thanks ahead.

Eric

A Shure 55 has the same gain as a SM57? Has it been fitted with a jack plug and not an XLR? The very old 55's were high impedance, but I think the deluxe is the standard mic impedance.

Thanks C7sus,

I see the table but not sure what I am supposed to really be looking at.

I guess the bottom line is you are saying the cloudlifter would be helpful BUT my preamp must then also be weak. Turning it up all the way does nothing. Now, I'm not running a big studio so I have a little scarlett amp. I use a couple other mics, among them being this MXL 4000 (Amazon.com: MXL 4000 Multi-Pattern FET Studio Condenser Microphone: Musical Instruments) which works quite well for voice overs.

Is that considered a god mic? lol

But, I've always noticed there could be more gain in the preamp. So, perhaps a better question is, would it be better to get a more powerful preamp?

Thanks,
Eric

Hi Alan,

I called the Sweetwater guy that sold it to be and the Shure 55 Deluxe he said actually should not require the cloudlifter and has like 3 times the gain of normal dynamic mics. He also compared it more to the 58. It's fitted with an XLR.

So now I'm even more confused since I had the gain pretty well maxed out last time I tried this thing and got like no volume. I am giving it another shot tonight to see if I did anything wrong but pretty simple deal. lol

Did you say what the preamp is? Does it have a pad on it and if so is it on?

Alan.

It depends what preamp you have and how loud the sound source is. If you are recording something quiet from 10 feet away with a preamp that doesn't have much gain, you will have a much different experience that you will if you throw the thing in the back of a jet engine.

Do you have a 57 or a 58 to compare the output to? (The MXL is a condenser mic, so it has much more output than a dynamic)
