Hey guys, . . I was just wondering if there is really that much difference in sound, and quality between the older 545sd, and the new Shure 57 mics. . .

. . in a Home studio environment, . an I really going to notice a big quality difference, . . .just curious, . since I've heard so many good things about the 545, and I was just wondering how they compare to the new 57.s

As a vocal mic, I think there's a big difference. The 545 semms to naturally compress with a smoother top than a 57. I use it quite a bit in the studio as a vocal mic. Since it's the only one I own, I tend to keep it well away from drummers so I've not use it on snare.

the two 545-s i have seem to have a lower output than the 57. i dont like either on vocals.

i've got 3 545's and i like them better than any 57 i've used. 1 of my 545's is US-made and the other 2 are mexican. the US sounds richer and more full than the 2 mexis. i would put the 2 mexis on the same playing field as the newer 57's i've used.

really, it's in the mic and how well it's been treated. and with the 545's and 57's, the mic pre really makes a difference. there's a world of difference between running my 545's through my mackie pres compared to my VTB1 or Symmetrix 528. 57's and 545's seem to be very sensitive to impedence loading.

that said, i'll take a 545 over a 57 any day.

cheers,
wade

I can't take your review seriously if you think a mackie pre is going to determine the quality of a mic.
This mic certainly has a lower output than the SM57, brand new or used. don't let anyone tell you different. But it handles sound very well.
Anyone ever heard of gain? or possibly a limiter? its a different sound, but if you know how to set levels, its a great mic to be used as, with, or along with an SM57

Oh dear, quite an attitude, and that on just a second post :P

454's are great, but you have to keep in mind that they've made them troughout the 60's and 70's (and I believe 50's), so if you buy used ones the output may be low simply because the mic is older. And always make sure you've got one with the right impedance. They were made high impedance, low impedance, and dual impedance. I wouldn't use a high impedance one for recording, but they make nice harmonica mics.

It's always funny when someone is surfing the net for info then stumbles across an old thread here at HR. Then post in it - for us it's a blast from the past.
