Should I use WD40 on my guitar?

Or if you are trying to remove the initials written on it by a local musician with a Sharpie. Especially is the initials are V.P.

Not to derail this on-topic thread.... ;)
...but I don't get why some guys like their necks so "slippery" or dry-n-powdery?

Yeah, it may seam faster when it's like that but I actually prefer a bit of tackiness.
When my hands are real dry, I'll use some hand lotion just to get a little better touch on the neck. I find that for me there's much more stability that way.
I mean...you're not really clinging to the neck anyway when you play, you just kinda anchor your hand/thumb in spots and then you release and move it as needed.
It's not like you're supposed to have a death grip on it that you need some lubricant or powder just to move along it.

*shrug*

I use Pledge/Endust on the neck wood (not fretboard) and get all the slipperiness I want. WD40 is water-dispersed oil, why in god's name would you want to put oil on your guitar?!

I use it when the tremolo spring on my bigsby starts to squeak.

WD40 is a water dispersing (fish) oil & Moresound is a funny fellow.

If you have corrosive sweat and therefore have to replace strings too often, you can spray some on a rag and use it to wipe down the strings. this will not harm the guitar.

I use Royal Purple Lite-11. It's a racing oil, but I play pretty fast, so I need it.

I reccomend Castrol GTX. You'll be up to speed with EVH in no time.

Don't forget to change your strings every 3 months, or 30, 000 songs, whichever comes first. I put a little sticker on my headstock to remind me.

I just buy a new guitar for every gig.
They come with new strings on them.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the US version of WD40 main ingredient an inert hydrocarbon? = very bad to living creatures.

Obviously you aren't shopping at Guitar Center--I don't think they ever touch their stock except to take them out of the boxes and hang them on the walls. LOL

I have heard very many mixed reviews on this, but most have came from very reputable guitar techs who say "no" - back in the day it was used more for easier glide on the strings, and to help prevent them from premature rust. It it not entirely fretboard friendly (on some materials), and there are many great products out now which have better results and are designed for this purpose. Look at "Fast Fret", as well as "Finger Ease" - Fast Fret is designed especially for what many people used WD for (easier glide on the strings). And there is no replacement for a good wipe down before you put the guitar away to help prolong string life. When they start to tarnish, it is PAST time to replace them.
