Should I upgrade to latest Sonar version?

Hey guys.

I am using Sonar 2.2 XL and have been for a few years.
I know it pretty well and I like it.

I run through a Darla 24 card which works well for me also.

Now here's the question. If I upgrade to the latest Sonar version (4), will I get a lot of value from doing so? or will it cause me to require a new sound card?

Do the advances in Sonar 4 from 2.2 justify the expense of a new sound card? Will I even need a new sound card?

Thanks for any opinions that you may have from your experience.

No, I wouldnt do it. I know a guy who uses sonar 1. I think you good on it, unless you have the money to spend.

If the card runs under 2.2 it will run under 4.0.

There is no way in hell that I would go back to using 2.2. 4.0 is far superior -

- Universal bussing architecture
- Track folders
- Clip muting/soloing
- Per track EQ
- The Sonitus effects
- An audio engine that sounds clean, not smeary...

Q.

wow. sounds like some awesome features, and I have been reading the cake walk site a bit.

generally is the sound really that much cleaner? or is it a real subtle difference?

i also like the audio metronome for click tracks. i dont have a need for midi and would like to take the sound blaster (midi synth) out of my pc.

thanks for the feedback so far.

ps. how are those lexicon plugins?

You should not upgrade...unless you want better workflow, better plugins, better appearance and better sound!

4.1 is a nice upgrade...costs a bit. did the upgrade myself sometime...wasn't too keen on the cost but now...no regrets.

can't comment on sonar 4, but i tried sonar 2.2 and then went ahead and bought sonar 3 (which i use right now). it is a big step up i think. i have sonar 3 producer and am very happy with it.

ok. so i am evaluating sonar 4.01 right now.

its way cool! i can definitely hear a difference in the clarity of the recordings.
and the user interface is wonderful!
one thing: i am noticing is a delay in the phones when I engage the "input echo". Is there way to make this real time so I can monitor in the phones real time what is going to "tape"?

anyway around this?

also. the upgrade to the producer version will cost me $250 and the studio version will cost $99. I guess I can only get track folders with producer version - this alone seems to make it worth it. what do you you guys think?

Thanks again!

producer version with some very nice features...eq per track (don't know if the light version has this) check the feature comparison table on the Cakewalk site.

The track folders feature alone is worth it in my opinion, I'm loving it!

You gots yourself some latency there. The bane of many a digital home recordist... You can try adjusting it in the Audio Options and see "how low can ya go" with your soundcard/computer without getting pops/clicks/dropouts. See if you can get your latency down to <10 msec - that's generally considered a threshold for workability. Still too long for some people - obviously try to get it as low as possible without problems.

au contraire, mon frere... You get track folders with Studio version as well (that's what I'm using - don't really have any need for surround sound stuff). Check out cakewalk.com - it has a list of whatcha get in Producer and Studio versions.

i bought sonar 4 producer. i figured what the hell. some features to grow into.
thanks everyone for your feedback!

for anyone else using sonar 2x or lower, I would definatley upgrade to 4. The interface is so much nicer to work with and there seems to be a noticable difference in the quality of the sound you get. I cant say how much of an improvement it is over the 3x version so I wont speak to that.

Thanks for the link to this thread luminosityband, I think im gonna go ahead and try out version 4. :)
