Should I get one SM57 or two MXL 990s?

Hi, I'm totally new to recording.

I'm getting a Fostex 8-track. What would be better for recording guitar, piano, conga and cello? I'm planning to play all of these instruments myself.

I know that having two mics opens up more possibilities for stereo imaging, but don't know if one excellent mic will offer better sound than two lesser but still good mics or if it just depends on what kind of sound I want?

I would probably go for the 2 mics as long as that Fostex has preamps with phantom power.- the 990's will need it.

The 57 is better mic all around but you probably wouldn't notice with the rest of the gear and the instruments you are recording. While a high end pre can do wonders with a 57, those 990's will probably give you a lot more mileage because they are more senstive and give you the option to record in stereo. You'll outgrow them- something that won't happen with a 57- but they probably serve you very well until then.

Welcome aboard!!

Thanks a lot for the advice. I'm planning on getting an MR8HD. I'm not sure if it has phantom power. I think it does though....yes it does.

Would any preamp do? Like an ART Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp? Since, I'm just starting out, I don't want to spend too much.

In theory a better preamp would sound better and add phantom power if the MR8HD didn't have it. The SM57 is also known to sound much better with a much better preamp- but not really within your budget (or mine, for that matter.)

Just starting out though I wouldn't worry about it. The Fostex and the 990's- along with 2 mic calbes and a couple stands will get you going. The MR8HD has 4 preamps on it so you don't need to buy any others.

Take care,
Chris
