I already have a software compressor that came with my cubase software that works pretty good, but I've heard that vocals, unlike guitars, should be compressed as they're being recorded. So, even though I have a software compressor, should I still buy a hardware compressor, keeping in mind it would only be an Alexis 3630 If i bought one.

If it's a 3630 or nothing, I would take nothing!

Seriously

You don't need a compressor for vocals on the way in. Just don't record so hot the the louder notes are going to clip. Keep it within a reasonable level and you'll be ok. Then compress after you're done.

You beat me to it. :D

You'll probably get better results using your software compressor the way jonnyc described.

At least invest in a DBX they arent that much more expensive.
If you buy the 3630 your ears will shrivel up and fall off, no joke! :p

Or get a FMR RNC. Only about $70 more than the 3630, and much better. It would be worth the wait, IMO.

You definitely don't want to record something as "one take is magic" as vocals with crummy effects printed to it... my advice would be until you can get your hands on a nice compresser (something far better than the 3630) just record safe levels and compress afterwards where you can undo and rethink...
