I just got a free creative PC 512 soundblaster card (a new one in a box was here at work and noone wanted it..)

I have a creative ensoniq soundcard in my PC at home...

could I run these 2 together for 2 inputs? I use win98SE and n-track studio...

motherboard: abit bh6 (old as hell)
p3 700e at 933
256mb pc133

It's no big deal really, I'm just curious...

if it will be a big hassle to install both then I'll forget it...I can keep doing one-track-at-a-time for demo work...

I record more at my bandmate's house anyway, so I don't have a real DAW yet (as you can probably guess from the soundcard I have lol..)...

Thanks...:D

They won't work simultaneously. When cards are capable of cascading like that they usually have a sync cable and special drivers.

Yup. It'll never work. I once bought 3 identical sound cards and went through hell installing them (there's a thread around here somewhere). Even with the same card, the audio would drift at about 3 minutes.

Hey Sean, were you the guy that did that experiment? Where you posted images of the wave files to show how they went slightly out of synch? I couldn't find it in the archives, but it sounds like it was.

If so, I just wanted to tell you I enjoyed the hell out of that thread. It was a great idea and I was thouroughly entertained by your reports and results.

I love you man!

Sean, How do they drift? Are you saying when playing a multitrack file the different tracks drift out of sync? I'm surprised they even installed. Were you actually able to use all the in/outs at the same time?

Lame Thrower, yup that was me. Glad to hear there's at least some benefit from my goofy-ass adventures :D

Tex,

They were 3 very inexpensive cheap consumer cards (all identical). My idea was to get 6 ins and outs for under 60 bucks (actually, it was my necessity at the time). It took me 2 evenings to get them installed and working and individually recognized within the audio app (under Win98se). I ran some tests using a drum machine click track and a makeshift splitter to record them all at once. The result was a (fairly negligible) drift that became a problem around the 3 minute mark. You could see (and hear) the offset in the waveform.

As it turned out, I was able to use it by manually splitting and nudging the needed tracks to keep them in line. By the time it was all said and done, I had a half-ass, cheap, noisy 16 bit 6 input setup. It hadn't been worth it, and I remember saying in the post that this was going to have to do until I got a Delta 1010. I ended up with a C-Port, but I'd never go though all that again. :)

good god.......rofl...

well, that idea is out then:D thanks.....

anyone have a link to that thread? ora title?
