Should I cancel the NT1 order?

I just placed an order for a Rode NT1 for my home studio. It won't be shipped for a while since Musician's "Friend" has it back ordered.

The problem is that I look in the latest Electronic Musician and see an add for this new Rode NT1000 that is supposed to be as good as a certain neumann mic. Probably not quite true, but the price of the new Rode ($395 suggested) makes me think this may be a better deal for me. I've had good luck with the NT3s and would like to stick with Rode. Any input appreciated.

PS. My ass is still blistered from the flaming I received a couple of days ago for trying to say something good about RadioShack. Be gentle with me.

AND SO IT SHOULD BE.......... Radio Shack "gear" - YIKES!!!!!!
:D

BTW, I like the NT2 very much - very smooth, but is a bright mic, not appropriate if you like a darker sound.

I've owned an NT1 for a few months now, and it has made a huge difference in my recordings. And for $179 you can't beat it or complain about it. Maybe the NT1000 is better, maybe not (Event/Rode does make great mics, though).

agree with above
ive got a nt1
no its not a neumann or even that close and sometimes i hate it but for 179$
hard to go too wrong

Why not get BOTH? The NT-1's are workhorses. They may not be replacements for the TLM-103 but at $179 who cares?

If you really want GREAT sound quality out of a Rode, splurge the extra $150 and get an NT2...as I said in my other thread...AMAZING....

I just posted my (amateur) thoughts on the NT-1 in another thread.

And for whatever it is worth, my very first recordings were done with a Radio Shack mic into a boom box. Of course I was 16 at the time and probably spent less than $16 on the mic. Boy did it sound bad. But you gotta start somewhere.....

Sorry to stay off topic, but....

Geez, I just used a pair of Radio Shack PZM's bought in 1986 for a live 2 track recording just 2 weeks ago. Funny how 2 $39 mics gave me as good a sound as I have heard on a few "professional" live recordings lately. I just duct taped them to the walls at the back of the room and Viola, a decent stereo field and crystal clean sound for next to nothing. The band I recorded said it sounded better than the guy who recorded them with a famous brand 16 track digital workstation. Sure, maybe that guy didn't know squat, I'm not claiming I do either. Yeah, the kick drum on my recording wasn't optimum and the house mix had to be good in the first place for it to work, but all in all, it was a near exact representation of their sound in that room, that night. Which is what I think live recordings should be about anyway.
So although 99% of Radio Shack's stuff is crap, don't knock something until you've tried it. All this stuff about having to have just certain mics is hogwash. Every mic has a different voice, and because music is in the ear of the beholder, someone is gonna like it's sound. Neil Young said EVERY guitar has at least one song in it, and I beleive every device has at least one useful purpose in the audio spectrum. Just my $.02 worth.

For the money those PZM's are nice, the only thing I would every consider buying from RS...... I've used them a lot for television sporting events, and they work quite well, plus I've heard that when mounted and aimed right, strings can sound quite nice on PZM's..........

Anything with the letters R.A.D.I.O S.H.A.C.K. on the outside will disintegrate after not more than 3 usages. It will disintegrate so thoroughly and irreversibly that it will be unusable even as a paperweight.

The old "Shack" PZMs were cool but you can't get them any more. The one's they sell now (boundry mics) are NOT the same. Pretty crappy.

Ya....... the old ones were made by Crown I believe......... and they are supposed to be great, and if U bought them 15 years ago....... those might be the models =)

The new ones do suck, I easily agree on that =)

I have VINTAGE MICS!!!!

OK, as I mentioned earlier in this post, I have two of the CLASSIC, VINTAGE Radio Shack (CROWN) PZM mics. Bought them in about '86 or '85, and I will let them go for $500 apeice because they are vintage, and everybody knows that vintage is where it's at! They are even a matched pair, I know because I bought them both at the same time and they came in the same kinda box!! It has been said they closely resemble the classic Neumann U87 in clarity and warmth. So hurry on up and lay yer money down, these classic mics will not last long at this bargain price!

GREEN?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Oh my gosh no! These are the semi-gloss black "Darth Vader" models! Only a handful produced in the "Return of the Jedi" series. It even has a little Ewok emblazened on the back side ( the side you duct tape to the wall). The green ones are only worth $350 or so, these are the Duesenbergs of the PZM world! :)

Back to the Rode mic, i've been reading on r.a.p. about it a little, and it seems that if you want to return it, they will give you the money that you spend on it towards a new tlm-103 at list price, but not refund your money...Definately something to check into before you put out a lot of cash for a mic that you haven't heard before...If that return thing is true, i'd say fuck it, unless you have another $600 to spend on a list price tlm-103 :)

Sup Travis ;)

(This is Jason, bought the NT-1 from ya, sure hope it gets hear tommorow, hehe.) :D

Anyways, couldn't he just cancel the order from Musician's friend since it hasn't been shipped yet?

Hey Travis, when you expecting to get that Marshall v67? I would like to hear your comments on how it compares to the NT-1.

Jason - yeah, he could cancel the NT1 from MF, but he was asking about the NT1000 or whatever too, and that's what i've heard about the return policy on that, don't know if it's true or not :)

Hopefully i'll be getting the v67 by the end of the week, i'll mess around with it this weekend and let everyone know how much it kicks ass :)
