So I was browsing AKG mics...and I came across one...
The AKG C12VRSP Classic Tube Microphone. This microphone costs $10,000. Is it really 10000% better than a Neumann TLM103? Pretty much, why in the hell would anyone buy this microphone?

Here's how Craig Anderton over at Expert Forums would answer that question:

"A few points to ponder... First, the point of diminishing returns. A $200 speaker will be twice as good as a $100 speaker. A $400 will be 1.7X as good as a $200 speaker. An $800 speaker will be 1.5X as good as a $400 speaker (I'm just pulling these figures out of the air, but you know what I mean). I don't think a $10,000 speaker is ever twice as good as a $5,000 speaker. When it comes to mic pres, or any gear, the very top of the line stuff is there to give you that extra 10% - 15%. It may be more gold-plated contacts, or a shock-mounted PC board, or pots that are point-to-point wired to a circuit board rather than wave-soldered in place.

Second, the vocalist you're recording is the same vocalist, regardless of what mic pre you use. The performance is always what matters."

when , BY God's grace, I get my first million, I will get one of those for my personal studio.

But not before I have bought my pagani Zonda and my Lamborghini Diablo... but maybe before my Ferrari 360 modena

for reals

if you get a car you can get a job and if you ca nclear some money after gas, insurance etc you can buy lotsa mics!!
That 10k mic must have been a misprint... I sure hope so.

NOPE!

That's a Stephen Paul modified AKG C12VR. Worth the money? Absolutely! Can you or I afford it? I sure can't! I DO need a new car myself actually... This is a pro mic. Not a semi-pro mic like you and I usually consider a pro mic. Do pro studios often use semi-pro mics and equipment? Absolutely! All the time! But they also use pro gear.

It's sure true though. A LOT of times, you get to a point where it's not "better", but "different". You have to decide for yourself if having that particular "difference" is worth it for the money. It IS for MANY, AND it ISN'T for MANY!

That's not bad considering more than twice that price for an SP moded Telefunken ELAM251 or the brand new SPA mic releasing in no more than 2 years.
