Wasn't sure where to post this, so I posted here...

Hi, so as of right now I live with my mom and nobody knows about my home recording setup or anything I own really. But pretty soon here I'm moving in a house with a couple old friends and I'm a little worried about coming home and finding all my stuff gone. I trust my two friends completely, but some of their friends that they have, not so much. There's this one guy in particular that I know has stolen from another friend before but I'm not sure if I should be judging him based on that.

Well anyway, do you guys think I should be worried?

Let's assume that someone is for sure going to want to get into my room. What precautions can I take to prevent getting robbed?
Any thoughts?

Thanks guys.

Is your gear in your own room?

First thing's first. Insure it all and fit some locks. :)

Quick response lol. Yeah, it will be. Along with my big screen TV. How much does it cost to get gear insured?

Yep. Renters insurance is cheap really. Take down serial numbers for everything and take pictures.

If you have the ability, install a fire rated steel door with double cylinder dead bolts. Windows are a problem. Steel bars can help.

^These are a bit extreme, but that is what I have. Remember, if someone really wants your shit, they will get it. Nothing will stop them. Your best bet is to live with people that you trust.

Ahh, I see you live in Denver. You can come over and steal my shit if your gets stolen. lol!

Hit me up, I can help you personally if you like. I'm kind of a nice guy. :D

This works too...

You can always hit the right note with one of them....

Has he found god ( again maybe ) in the interim ?

Be concerned and cautious.

Hm, renter's insurance sounds good. I'm a low income college student though so I hope it's nothing like 50 bucks a month!

Wait, how does renter's insurance work? I pay like 15 bucks a month and then if my stuff gets jacked they just give me like $9,000 just like that? Sounds too good to be true. How do they prevent fraud? Is there an investigator?

My wife has been in insurance for 16 years. Yes, that is kinda how it works. Just call your car insurance provider. You will get a discounted rate by 'bundling' your coverage. Yes, renters insurance will pay the replacement cost of your gear, if you set it up that way. You need to document your purchases with receipts and or pictures and always serial numbers. If you don't specify replacement in your policy, you will only get actual cash value for your gear, which is way less than what you paid for it. Talk to an agent, the cost to get replacement value is not that much more. Around $20 per month for $10,000 worth of gear in Colorado. But you gotta have your gear documented. There will be an investigation if your shit is stolen. Not too good to be true. Most people don't get ripped off by friends.

Hm, thanks for the info. I feel alot better now.

On a side note, your gear is legit Jimmy. I have use a distant mic for recording my guitar amp as well as a close mic. Does putting those professional foam pads behind it make that much of a difference??

Oh and that Savannah girl you're talking to is too cute lol.

...There's this one guy in particular that I know has stolen from another friend before but I'm not sure if I should be judging him based on that...

ABSOLUTELY you should judge him based on that. People judge others based on the yardstick that they carry within themselves, so if you're a honest decent chap then you're going to think that everyone is basically honest and decent. Likewise if you're a lying thieving sack-of-shit then you're going to think that everyone is basically a lying thieving sack-of-shit. Since people's ability to rationalize is infinite it's not difficult for sacks-of-shit to justify their actions since... after all... whatever they do to you, you'd do to them.

One of the other things I tell my kids is to watch out for 'friends' who are nice to you but less so to others. If you have 'friends' who badmouth, slander, or steal from others it's only a matter of time before they badmouth, slander, or steal from you.

Well said Wheely.

Move in with your friends; leave your gear at your mom's house. Record there, adjust your schedule accordingly. I mean... if it comes down to where you have to ask this question, then you shouldn't put yourself in that situation.

This.

When I have a band over to record, I draw the line at them bringing their friends along - people who don't really have an interest in how good the band sounds but may have an interest in the gear they itemise as they case the joint...

Locks are for honest men...

Don't trust anyone who doesn't have your interest in keeping your gear... and that means everyone
