Ok, so I might need some new monitors. I'm looking around at classifieds and on eBay. I found a couple interesting buys and want some of your opinions.

Event PS-5 Studio Monitors
Asking Price: US$400

Genelec powered monitors 1030 a's $350.00 obo

Alesis Monitor Ones
Asking Price: US$150

Then of course the all popular Event 20/20's which seem to run from $280 - $350 new.

What looks most interesting to me are the Genelec 1030A's....they're biamped. I can't find a price on them but the 1029A's run at $1000. Anyone?

The 1030As should cost around $2200 new.
That is a good pro high end pair.
The 1029's IMHO aren't worth the price you have to pay just becuase it's a Genelec.

I bought my pair of Genelec 1030A's from a music store in Finland (Where Genelecs are made) and they cost $1600 (new pair!).
I wouldn't change them to any other monitors...well, maybe some day to Genelec 1031A's...

I agree with Shailat that you should pass 1029A's and go directly for 1030A's.

I would contact the seller and find out what is wrong with these monitors - $350.00 is an insane price if they don't need any repair. I'm not going to snipe you on the genelec's (I promise), but where did you find the ad for these? I should be checking this list out, wherever it is.

Also, $150 for the monitors one's isn't a bad deal if they don't need any repair/driver replacement. They usually go for $220 on ebay - new or used (and sell brand new at musician's friend for 249.99). Where did you find this ad? I might pick these up if you don't want them.

good luck,

just remember to always get the seller to guarantee you that the speakers sound like new (or as close to new as possible), you don't want to get stuck with blown speakers - it happens a lot - espeicially if they were used at a rental facility.

Well, I'm no stranger to buying online, so I of course contacted the guy immediately... he was selling SOOOO much gear, I thought perhaps he might not have known what he had. Therefore I didn't say, "why are these so cheap", I just asked for pictures and such. I saw the add at harmony-central BTW.

He responded, "sorry, that was a misprint, they're actually $850 a pair, but someone else is about to buy them."

Oh well. $850 is still a good deal it sounds like, but out of my range. $350 kinda makes me cringe right now too but I would've done it for those suckers.

Hopefully I'll be getting a decent sized bonus check here in three weeks. I've decided to repair my current "monitors" as well as I can in the mean time, and then use them for the home stereo when I get some new monitors.....hopefully in three weeks...oh please oh please.

Slack,

Haven't checked out the actual price myself, but zzounds says they have E 20/20's really cheap this week (whatever that's worth). Have you checked there?

They have bad prices on the 20/20's ... in fact that's MSRP I think!

I've seen them as low as $290 but they seem to hover in the $320 range. I've been looking at them for a while. I think I'm going to break down and buy a pair....maybe...

actually, zzounds is selling the 20/20 passives for $289, shipping included! the best price on the net from what I can tell.

If you go to the page where they're selling these and click "add to cart" the price will show up - otherwise you have to e-mail them to get the quote. The list price they print is just that, the list price - it is not their price.

Aha, that's why it was so high. Thanks for the tip :)

Hey Slack,

Try to find some good sounding, one way speakers, they will give you more reproduction, and less production, brought on by them crazy tweeter, woofer interactions.

This is not the popular oppinion, I know, but what the heck.

I'm lucky enough to have a pair of (tri-amped)ATC 50's around for room monitoring but I always make sure to listen to all my mixes thru NS10M's and Tannoy PBM 6.5's (just because my ears are very used to them.)
