Hi, Looking for some advice on drum machine purchase. I have a $300-$400 budget. Using for home recording only. Any replies to help get me started are appreciated. Thanks Pj

I use the Boss Dr 770. Its got some cool sounding kits, and a good range og on board patterns. Touch sensitive pads and all the usual midi connections etc.
It doesn't have seperate outs for each drum though.

It works even with a 486
Depending on your soundcard, if you're using a SB LIVE, you can have 10 drum kits AND have access to a variety of other instruments available to midi.
It is very easy to use, and you can program a few bars, and put into a loop .... or .... once you perfected something, copy, then paste ... paste ... paste ( this saves time )
I have found it better to program with PC
My drum machine hasn't seen the light of day for 3 years now.
One excellent advantage is the availablity of midi songs out there on the internet. I edit the midi's, and remove the unwanted tracks, like vocal guides, the guitar tracks.

I'm not sure if you are still looking for advice, but I own the Boss Dr. 202 and I love that machine. Programming is a breeze and it even has a bass function so you can add to your drum tracks. I got mine on Ebay for $150 and it fits all my needs. It is one of their older models, but still ranks up there as a great drum machine. It comes with the 808 and 909 drum kits along with some analog and older-type sounds. It has real time effects and filters that can spice up your drum tracks.
It also depends on what type of music you are looking to make. I use it for trip hop type beats, but it was made for Hip-Hop, Techno, Jungle, Drum 'n' Bass, Latin and more. There are some weird sounds in the machine, but overall it is great.

I used a Yamaha RY9 Rhythym programmer for the song in my signature line. I think the sound is pretty good. I have not studied how to program it yet; what you here are all presets.
