I was in a lesson in the studio today and the tutor asked if we knew what shelf EQ does, i thought that it affects all frequencys above or below a certain frequency, like above 12Khtz on the the Hi and below 80htz on the Lo, He says no, it just affects the one frequency, like only 12k on the highs. Is this right? Didn't wanna say at the time but doesn't sound right...

That's funny. Yup, just to reinforce you here, you were correct, the tutor was wrong. Ask him when was the last time he saw a book shelf consisting of a tiny little pointy piece of wood, as opposed to a big long piece of wood.

hahaha yeah i was like, but, ummmm, why would it do that?! I'll tell him he's a dumb ass next time i see him hahaha.

YOU are correct.
Not doubting your word but I thought shelving was a predetermined frequency set at the factory (usually 100hz, 1k, and 10k). The only thing you could do with it was cut or add eq. It had no sweepable mid or Q setting.

I'm wrong?

That sounds more like graphic EQ.

Sweepable EQ's with no width setting are semi-parametric.

Add the width setting and it's full parametric.

Some shelf EQ's allow you to set the corner frequency.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure the pro engineers like John or Ronan will correct me. The way I understand it, Chamelious is correct.

Some shelf EQ's also allow to change the "Q", but this functions differently than an individual band filter.
Basically a higher Q will give you a steeper slope up to the shelving point.
If the EQ is a resonant shelf, then a steeper Q will also mean a stronger resonance (a bigger "dip" just before the "climb").

haha now im not sure myself everyone seems to disagree...

Well there are lots of models of EQ with different combinations of the standard features.

But a SHELF EQ is generally a %#&$ SHELF EQ. Your tutor either misunderstood the question, had a brain fart, or... there something else I don't know about thats going on.

Maybe its one of those rare EQ's that can be used to replace dynamics after too much compression? :D (If that wasn't funny click here for the link to some FUNNY reading...)

Hah, no its the shelf EQ on a regular Soundcraft Ghost console.

Where's Walters when you need him?

I just read The Daily Adventures of Mixerman. Twice.

Essental reading for anyone who...

Well, for anyone.

Slipperman's also a hoot to check out.

Yes - you're wrong.... what you said is only true of cheap, budget-oriented gear (where they skim over such "technicalities" ).... a proper console allows the shelving frequency to be selected.

Of course you're wrong. You've been wrong in every post you've made that I've read in every single thread you've posted in.

Holy shit.

Thanks for the link! That's the funniest (and most disturbing) thing I have read in a LONG time!!

Thanks and yes, my last recorder (fostex dig 8 track) was a piece of %&#@.

To Rami: Grow up, Woman and stop harrassing me! Out of all of the members I've met here, your the only one who is making this site look bad! I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed.

You have alot of growing up to do, little girl
