hey there d.i y.'ers,
anyone out there stumbled onto an online site, book, or article that they found paticularly useful in promoting their music, and getting it out to the world?
here's a few for starters that i think are cool:

for starting your own label - http://www.indiecentre.com
great book on publishing - "the songwriter's market"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...f=sr_1_1/103-7614058-3917419?v=glance&s=books (or borrow it from your library)
great venue database - http://www.pollstar.com
zines that will review indie music - http://www.insound.com/zinestand/

... these are fairly obvious, but i will gladly pass along any info i have run across as we get into more specific areas of this vast subject. there seem to be quite a few folks on this forum who have a lot of experience, as well as newbies with basic questions. let's see if we can pool our resources and network a bit. awright? awright.

... to those that sent me emails with questions, let's post stuff here, including questions, so that others may pick something up.
and by the way, for those who asked about materials for packaging your own cd's, i highly recommend:
http://www.bagsunlimited.com/
thanks - jv

thx for the info,

I haven't got the time for a good reply, or a good check of those links, but this quick post shows my gratitude, and I will check them later!

great thread

Brett

the Indie Bible is an excellent book on just this topic

there are tons of free sites that allow free uploads of your music and I recommend the more you can post your music on the better

http://soundclick.com/
http://besonic.com/
http://acidplanet.com/
http://dmusic.com/
http://songramp.com/
http://musicianmp3.com/
http://garageband.com/ --but must complete a ridiculous amount of reviews to upload one song at a time :bleh:

but there is a more sites listed here:
http://www.freewebs.com/jennaesindieintrusion/musiciansfriend/
(scroll down for the list)

Collaborating with artist has helped me as well if you are into that sort of thing...
it doubles your song exposure really IMHO
not only are your promoting the song .. but as well and the other artist involved.

http://internetbattleofthebands.com/
http://artistcollaboration.com/
and
http://96decibels.com/

are set up just for collabs directly

I created a website for free that has helped and is very simple to use
http://freewebs.com/

although I now have a .com site I am trying to resort everything too, but that too can be helpful in showcasing yourself.

Somewhere I have a list of like 200 college radio stations but I can't locate it at the moment, but another good avenue

hope some of this helps.

I also freely promote artist on my site as well
always willing to help out ;)
J~

thanks...

brett,
it's great to be able to correspond with someone from belgium, and get a bit of insight as to how things work over there.

jennae,
kudos for taking the time to post so much info. you seem like someone that may share a common approach to the biz. i think it's great that you and others on this board are getting indie sites up and running.
yes the indie bible that comes out every year is a great resource book for radio, internet, and retail outlets for indies. "releasing an independent record", by gary hustwit, is also a good book to check out in this arena.
garageband.com is a bit of a pain in the butt, as you said, concerning writing reviews, but i have had a really good experience with them... they are directly linked to cdbaby (my personal favorite online distro, and i've used a LOT), and i've reached people all over the world, and sold cd's to places i never thought possible.
anyway, please keep the input coming, and feel free to ask for info on more specific areas of promotion if you like. i've got a pretty extensive data base from working at this for a while, and i'm happy to share.
peace - jv

awesome John and thanks!
Basically I am searching for a broad overview of good info for indies to more or less gather as much as I can to display in one space.. as far as means and ways to help them assist themselves and sites or places they can check out like this place.

Anytime you come across something you would like to share please feel more than free...

I do what I can, but the extra assistance with info is always welcomed!

yeah garageband.com blows! heh...
actually if you want song feedback
dmusic.com is the place to go honestly,
for you WILL get it there
but the secret there is that you HAVE to participate in the community in order to get it.
But if you review songs or listen to other peoples tunes they are very good at returning the favor.
I've just seen better management in my days .. grrrr

I get some reposnse out of soundclick
but I dig on that place for the unlimited uploads

BeSonic tends to grab a little feedback too

I guess you get what you out into it really.

But thanks again for the offer to assist
Much appreciations!
J~

Hey John just peeped out your site and heard your music...
AWESOME ACOUSTIC STUFF! you got a great voice!
"MY OWN DESIGN" I think is my favorite..
too bad it cut off :sob:

that guitar was wild.. but wow those vocals! awesome!
props!

thanks jennae

... that song actually did pretty well for me with college radio, and a bit abroad. if you pm me your address, i would be happy to send you a promotional copy w/ three songs off the cd (including "my own design"), if you like.
i will try to upload some stuff to soundclick when i have a chance, but i am so busy these days, it may take a moment.
it's great networking with you, and i hope more folks jump in on this thread with ideas or questions so we can keep the ball rolling.
peace - jv

YOU!
........................................ have been pm'd

... and this thread is a rocking idea...
great idea ya had there john.

I have more info I can post when I feel the energy...
right now I am debating bed for too few hours or coffee..
hmmmm
decisions decisions....

I should really sort that list of college radio stations...

my own adio station is on my list of things to get...
I think I'm going to ask santa for one next year

D*mn john why I gotta read all that...
I might as well be signing my own contract if I gotta read that much ...

can't you just summerize for us lazy folks :lmao: =P

but awesome!
Yeah.. I think Indie is the way to go...
industry is looking more and more like a back handed compliment
:shrugs:

This is why I want our own INDIE INDUSTRY

c'mon jennae... that article is shorter than some of the posts on this forum ;)

as for an indie industry... there definitely is one, and it is getting bigger all the time. networking is what it's all about. i've met some of the greatest music fans and artists working and touring in independent circles.

I know I know
Just teasing =P

and networking is KEY

I just hadn't sorted any sleep yet today
and at 6 am
that article looked awefully wordy ...lol

but then I went on to read the forums for another hour so...
ok
