Hello,

I'm totally new to recording. In the past, I recorded through the line/in port of my computer but I got sick of the hiss. Just today, I finally found through Google that an audio interface would probably solve my problems.

After researching, here's what I plan to buy:
  • XLR Cable
  • Shure SM57
  • Tascam US100

I plan to mostly record vocals but I might do electric guitar recording as well (the tascam seems to support XLR and 1/4 guitar input). I expect with this I can plug the mic into the cable, the cable into the audio interface, and the interface into the computer's USB port and start recording from there with some software. Is there anything else I need?

I also already own a RODE Videomic. Would an audio interface be able to cut out all the hissing (perhaps it's autogain control?) or will I have to invest in a Shure SM57 and an XLR cable?

Thanks so much for helping me out!

You will need a real microphone and cable. Like the 57 you mentioned.
Take a look and down load Reaper as your recording software it's a free unlimited trial and when your sure that you like it ... only $40.
I wouldn't go straight into your interface with your electric guitar I would mic your amp instead.

So are there any other recommendations for audio interfaces? I just want something that won't hiss when I'm recording.

As for my amp, it only seems to have an input and a headphone port. One solution I'm seeing says:

Run your guitar into your amp, mic / line out into audio interface, then interface plugs into computer via Firewire / USB. Keep the volume up on your amp as your record as it will be the only thing playing back any sound at all.

Can someone direct me to an example of a mic/line out cable? Is it the same as the green-tipped ones that you plug speakers into the computer with?

Thanks!
