Im going to be building a new comp, hardware, software, the whole smear. What I am going to be running is an Akai MPD, Cubase SX, and Kontakt. My budget is fairly flexible, up to around $3OOO.OO. Keep in mind I already have the Akai and software mentioned above but starting from scratch afer that. With that budget what model computer would you reccomend including specs: Ram, Hard drive, speed, soundcard?

OK:

Asus p4p800 MB

p4 2.6ghz

(2) Kingston 512MB memory Sticks..DDR3200

1 GeForce4 MX440 64MB ddr Video Card

2 WD Hard Drives...ATA100. Matching 120GBers. Partition, like, 20-30 GB off of each and run Clones of your OS on the partitions. Use the rest for storage.
Ensure you have a 8MB Cache. (Or S-ata if you like..I dont know if they are up to par yet, though!)

Case/420W PowerSupply
Keyboard/mouse to your preference

CD WRiter.. I love ASUS.. get something respecatble

DVD player

Soundcard of your choice.

Agreed with exceptions....
I would go with 1gig of ram and the hyper 3200 are nice as mentioned.
If you go with the ASUS P4P800 be sure to get the CPU with 800MHz FSB.
The partition is subjectable...not really neccesary.
I use the new WD 10,000 RPM Raptor SATA drive for audio files....works great.
And I prefer Yamaha CDRW's although I have never tried ASUS

Sorry to hijack the thread, but you do like those WD drives camn? I bought a 120 se for $80 after rebates at Officemax but I've read so many reviews saying it is very unreliable and when it crashes your data is gone gone. It does seem to be the fastest, though. I'm assuming it is poor QC because it seems hit or miss. I'm trying to decide whether to keep that (it has a 3 yr warranty too) or keep the Seagate with the same specs, which is supposedly slower but quieter (It was $60 after rebates) and seemingly more reliable (only has a 1yr warranty).

fembot,
The only soundcard I have ever used is the Aardvark Q10, but I like it. This is just my subjective opinion. It gives me the option of using its 8 mic pre's and 4 phantom power inputs until I can afford better separate pre's. It doesn't seem to have a very low noise floor though.

I've had my WD 60gig for about 3 yrs now. No problem at all, however, it becomes real loud as it gets old. btw, I've heard similiar things about how WD HDs die quite easily, but not mine, yet...

i run 6 w/d jb series 7200/80g drives and have only had one go bad, that was within 2 hours of the first fresh OS install, factory defect most likey, i have 2 that are close to 2 years old that have been filled, backed up, and reformated to a different partition config...

old w/d drives did die pretty easily from what i've read, most any drive will die quickly if you don't keep them cool, imh 2cent o...
