i guess i have nver used much midi at all :o

BUMP! i really need the help... guess maybe i can talk to the nerds in KVR but they scare me

Okay, because VSTi's like Sampletank free are treated as audio in Tracktion, you need to set up an audio track and NOT midi. Strange yes but somehow logical because you aren't dealing with just midi anymore but an actual tone generator or sampler, whatever the case may be. In fact you can even view the midi editor in the audio track. Those guys at Mackie are either looney or brilliant. I haven't decided yet. So long as you have your connections set up properly in the set up window, you should be able to just drag your midi contoller to a track and start recording your VSTi. I'm a fan of Tracktion but I've invested too much into Cubase to switch over right now.

I work with it every day - Tracktion and midi, that is!

First of all, here are links to two good articles on midi basics - part one and part two.

Everything effect or instrument you add to a Tracktion track is called a 'filter'. You add a new filter by pulling down the 'new filter...' widget in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Pull down the menu, go to the VST folder and select Sample Tank Free. Pull it down to Track 1. Then direct your attention to the left side of the screen - a click on the arrow-looking thing will bring up a list of all inputs that are available to Tracktion, both audio and midi. You will want an input from your keyboard to play Sample Tank, so choose the appropriate midi input. Now move just a little to the right and click on the 'track 1' name. A field will pop up at the bottom of the screen and at the far left of this field you can set the output for the midi track. Since you already have the midi instrument in the track you need to send this to an audio output. Sending to a midi output is only used when you want to control external hardware synths or sound modules from Tracktion.

If you need more help, feel free to post again - I'll be most likely to see your post in the Midi Mania forum.
