set up question

I had a quick question. I am going to be recording using a Peavey mixer (PV8) running into an E-MU 0404 SoundCard. I was wondering how to set it up so that i can directly monitor playback WHILE recording the new track. Would i run it back to the mixer as if it was the returns? or as if it was tape? and just click something to keep it from RE-recording the playback as well? PLEASE HELP
