Since adding the 4 bass traps to my 'everything' room, I've only done spot recording until Saturday. I had already done a scratch acoustic track, then recorded my piano track and a DI-ed 12-string track. Usually I record all the instruments before doing vocal tracks, but I had to take advantage of 'quiet time' in the house (sent the wife to her room). As I was also videoing the process, I had set up everything with that in mind.
Vocals, no problem, mic was about 2 feet out from a bass trap that I faced. Other traps are behind me (along with plenty of diffusion), so I felt confident I had taken the bad room reflections out of the equation. Listening to the tracks later confirmed that.
Then I set up to record the acoustic, with those cheap CAD condensors I picked up a couple of weeks ago. As i was still videoing, I kept facing the same direction, but now I was sitting down, and 5 feet from the single bass trap, which, hanging from the ceiling, did nothing for me. In hind site, of course I should have either turned around to face the bass traps on the other walls, or gone into the the big room next door, as I've been doing pre-bass traps.
I recorded a couple of acoustic rhythm tracks, and a few acoustic lead tracks.
Of course when I got down to start mixing, I could hear the room reflections on the acoustic tracks
. Luckily for me, this particular project is not one of my 'next album' songs, but something for an online project (hence the video), and the acoustic is more of a background instrument to the piano, and the room sound pretty much disappears in the mix.
"live and learn".
