looks like the very last paragraph (in italics) should be given some special attention

I found it easier to put the capstan assembly back on and remove the motor then put the belt on. I guess it's because of my fat hands.

I picked up an X7 for free a while back..just getting into checking it out. I don't really need the machine because I love my Tascam 22-2, but the challenge of seeing if the X7 can be brought back to lofe is there. Getting ready to replace the capstan belt, so congrats on getting yours swapped out. All looks relatively good on the machine...heads, rollers (one may need to be replaced), reels and transport buttons seem to work fine, passes signal, RC-71 work fine when hooked up to it. Besides needing a new belt, the pinch rollers won't engage. My hunch is the solenoid and plate slider are gunked up and stuck? Anyway the solenoid looks tough to get to. Any one serviced the solenoid and slider plate assembly on an X7 and have suggestions? Thanks for any help and please excuse the hijack.

It's been a while since I've looked on this thread but you might just have a case of sticky syndrome with the deck. Clean it as good as you can and then recheck

Just a quick update. After changing the belt and cleaning everything I Deoxed everything. Then I tried some older Sony tape my father in law had and everything's fine. The play, ff, and rr are now like it was when the deck was new. Thanks for all the tech help guys.
