Mixing and Mastering.
Song: "SERAPHIM"
http://www.soundclick.com/serotone

This is my first mix of this live heavyish rock track. I recorded it ages ago in an art studio and never got round to mixing it until today.
Im sure there are a few mix issues that need ironed out but im pretty happy with it.
Please comment on the mix quality if you get a chance. Its a cool song also.

I really liked the song. My favorite parts were when the guitars got heavy. I really liked the drum sound and the bass tone.

Thanks again for listening and commenting.
I cant mix on my computer as it doesnt have enough power to handle the plug ins.
So what I had to do was take each track seperately and guess the fx that would let them sit in the mix well.
Once I had rendered each track seperatley with the fxs I brought them all into Wavelab Montage and just automated the volumes and panned.
Funny and tricky way to mix!

Here is a new mix of the same tune.
Song: "SERAPHIM NEW"

I fixed the drums so they were more noticeable and boosted the guitar a tad. Think the kick drum could still be more present but the kick is really unconsistent in volume so was hard to try and control it. I think I have made it better.
Let us know what yous think please.

Cheers,
Eck

I only listened to the new track, as I am supposed to be doing something else besides listening to music on the computer. Sounds good here. Guitars seem to have a lot of midrange, but that's not really bad.....just a personal thing for my ears. I'd like to hear some "heavier" sounding guitars for this particular tune. Meaning, a bit more depth, since they don't have vocals to compete with. Sounds good though, and well mixed.

need is the mother of invention :)
i'm also on the borderline of what my machine can handle....

noisy drums! - sound cool and is something i'm never even close to with my sequencers :D i do wish there were vocals though, but that's just the way i am...

Yeah I totally agree with you on the midrange thing of the guitars. Although that is porbably the best distorted guitar sound I have ever mixed! I aint too hot on distorted guitars see. Yeah maybe a tad thin. I maybe could have cut some more mids from it and then boosted it a little to bring the lo end meat out.
Thank you for your comments. :)

Dont threat, Im gonna record the vox sometime next week and I will post it straight up. Ive got one more tune of the same band to mix which I will post in a few days.
Thanks. :)

The clean guitars have a unique sound. The distorted guitars sound like you have a wah pedal turned on but sitting in one position. I guess im trying to say that it sounds like one large band of the freq's has been scooped out. Im not very good with the "tech" aspect of this, I just turn knobs so I can't really point you to the right frequency. I think if the guitars had a little more bite somewhere in the mids they would jump out more compared to the clean section. Right now for me , I perceive the distorted section as being quieter because the guitars are scooped/compressed sounding. This might be fixed with Eq or different mic placement. Who knows though, with the right midrangey bass the distorted guitars might not need anything. Just a thought. Otherwise it sounds pretty cool.

Very high end heavy. When the distortion kicks in it sounds good though. Needs to vocals!

Cheers dude. 3 peice vocal harmonies are on their way.
Do you think this much hi end spoils the track? only added a wee bit at mastering. I really like the cymbals and hats.

Cheers for the comments Wireneck.
The guitar tone could be explained by a bee in a jar kinda sound. Was recorded in a toilet with tiles!! There were too many mids that sounded almost peircing to the ear and wasnt listenable loads of times over. So i did scoop a large smoothe mellow curve at about 1-4K of 1dB.
I like the dist guitar tone. But then again I aint too hot at dist guitar tones.
Thanks again.

I dont care much for the distorted guits.

Perhaps a different amp would help.

You got a good sound from the overheads, good job on that.

The kick drum....maybe try tucking a sample underneath.

It needs more balls IMO.

Where's the vox?

Ok Eck.

Heres a fact.

If i set up a Mesa triple rec in a carpeted room.
Put the settings just right for a nice distortion.

You "Absolutly could not get a bad sound".

Grab a 57....an mxl...whatever!

Any crappy pre.

And youd have a good useable guitar sound.

What amp does your guitar player use in your band?

In my band (Serotone) we use a Marshall DSL50 tube amp through a 1960 4x12 cab.
For this band (Fragile) the guitarist used a Fender 2x12 combo.
I think you could be right about the amp. Never was too sure of the sound of it although when playing at gigs they sound real good, but I know thats nothing to do with the recorded sound.

My problem is setting the distortion really. For this threads recording it was recorded live and the guitar was in a tiled toilet to avoid spill!! not the best really.
Thanks for the comment Finster. Not seen you about here for a while.

ps: your totally right about the kick. Not sure if i can be botherd putting a sample under every hit. would take me ages as its not to a click track.

Heres a new mix with more prominent kick drum and more volume automation on everything.

Song: "SERAPHIM NEWEST"

I sent the kick to another channel and compressed it loads and placed it under the original kick track. I also boosted the guitars at the heaviest parts.

Bumpidy bump.
Any critiques on the newest blind mix?
Cant seem to keep the high end on the kick drum at mastering. The limiting seems to kill it. Not really had that problem before but that was because I was mixing being able to add the fx while listening to all the tracks at once.
Eck

I can't comment other than I like the mix. Yep, that's about as technical as I can get since {goldfalcon} != {recording engineer}. What I can say is I like the groove of the tune. It has a "Pixies meet The Jesus and Mary Chain" sort of feel. I know it's not your band, but it's a cool vibe nonetheless.

Im sure "Fragile" will be pleased with your comment. gonna record the vox on my BR1180 in a few days and re-post.
