Probably dumb question but I had to ask.

When I record drums, is it possible to have every drum that I'm micing have its own track? I want to be able to have the snare ,bass drum ,toms and cymbals all have their own track so I can turn the desired drum up/down or adjust it after its recorded instead of only having the drums as a whole. Does this require a sound card with multiple channels or some other procedure I'm not familiar with?

Thanks for any help.

Yup, you need a soundcard that has one input for each piece you want to record on its own track. You also need a way to get those individual signals to the soundcard, whether it be a mixer with enough insert channels, or individual pre-amps.

I use a couple of Layla 24/96 cards to record my band. Kick (get used to it, no one says bass drum anymore), snare, and each of my toms get their own track. Overheads get recorded as a stereo track. That takes 7 inputs right there.

Are there any sound cards that are cheap but still get the job done that you can suggest? (I have a mediocre mixer right now)

I'd suggest M Audio's Delta 66. IMO, a damn fine soundcard for just under $200.

I have all the mics running into the mixer through their xlr ports, how do i make it so all the channels run seperately to the sound card ( from where on the mixer do i run cords to the sound card ) ?

thanks again

What mixer is it (make/model)? If it has inserts or direct outs on the channels, you can use those. If you have enough aux sends, you could use those as well.

You need one preamp w/line-out per microphone. If the mixer has enough direct (line) outs on enough channels, you're okay.
