I've used an EV 308 on my kick for years but have a 421 coming to me. Any thoughts on how they'll stack up in a head-to-head? I have a 20" non-ported kick and 22" and 24" inch ported kicks. Might one be more appropriate for some of those drums than others? They'll be used more in a live setting rather than studio.

Not a bad dilemma to have, though. EVs on snare and toms if it matters. Thanks for any ideas.

i have no idea really, 421's probably not the best kick mic (but an awsome mic!!!)

but i'd like to hear some samples of the ev 308b please :)

The 421 is an excellent kick mic and has many other uses.

421 is MUCH better for snare, get a D112 for kick, honestly

IMO the MD421 gives a more natural sound over other mics that are taylored for kick drums such as the D112. It all depends on what you are looking for. I use the Audix D6 for the heavy clicky type bass drum sound and the 421 for everything else.

clicky kick

nah, i'm in it for the *boom* rather than the click.

Personally, I would say look for a used EV PL-20 or EV RE-20.... of course the price tag keeps a lot of people away from them, but they are worth the money.
Also the Shure Beta-91 is an awesome Kick mic - and I generally don't like Sure mic's, but these are great.

I've got D112's mounted inside my Kicks, and for metal they aren't bad, but once you beat on them awhile (i.e., use them for kicks) they aren't really useful for anything else because the diaphragm gets overworked from the kicks. Half of the time I'll wind up triggering. Just put a small room sound on the Kick sample, and it has bonham all over it. i've got a tape around here where my brother and I were playing with kick drum sounds, and we had one that sounded like the best doubleheaded kick drum boom you could imagine - and the boom was all done with a small Room Reverb on a Behringer multi-effect unit.

The 421 is a killer mic for kick.
Another is the Beyer TGX50 if you can find one. http://www.nyteowl.com/boutique/TGX-50.htm

I don't know if they still make them - I don't see Beyer Mic's too much anymore. (and for the record the Beyer M422 is one of the best snare mic's ever! It cost me $150 in 1998, but it was WELL worth it. http://www.cannonsound.com.au/beym422tg.html)

For more click sounds, go with a D112 or an Audix.

The 308 isn't bad, but it would never be my first choice for a Kick mic.

D112 - Thuddy, boomy and lot's of mids

D6 - Clicky and good bottom... scooped

ATM25 - (D112 + D6) / 2

I got with lots of luck my hands on 2 MD421's!
Both for my kicks (double bass 22x18).
They work fine..but I still need to experiment with them...to see what they really can go up to.
Never tried any other (home)recording wise tho!
Live I've used beta91 & d112 both sounded great live.
