Just wondering what the verdict is on the former for the purposes of micing guitar amps (also, if it's noticeably better than the e606) and in the case of the latter, whether I'm wasting my time using it on a floor tom?

Well the 906 is a supercardoid with a three position roll off.
I own three of the 609s and love them and at times wish that they had the roll off features of the 906, but I get along with out those features.
So if you have a little extra cash .....heck why not go for the 906.
Might just might sound good on the floor tom from time to time depending on the drum kit your recording at the time.
I did try on the mounted toms once but the mic was to big to be used on that application.
But they do sound great with horns!
