Does anyone out there have any experience with the Sennheiser
E604s? I'm specifically looking for mics to be used on rack and
floor toms. I could easily employ EV-468's or Shure SM-57's on the racks, maybe EV 868's, Sennheiser E602's or AKG D-112's on the floors. I DON'T wanna fork over $300 a pop on new 421's. Sure, they're great mics-for a price. Fire away.

I have two e604's on my kit. They move around a lot but now I'm using one on my snare and one on my sock(hi-hat). I was able to buy them for $60.00 each on a special at GC one I got up in the Boston area and one from here in NY. They're good mics. If you haven't checked out the thread about Radio Shack down below, do so.Radio Shack has discontinued its 330-3032 instrument mics. These are identicle to e604's in almost everyway except that the housing is just a tad larger. Rumor has it that these were made for Radio Shack by Sennheisser and that a conflict happened and Sennheisser pulled the plug and Radio Shack discontinued them. They are blowing them out or $14.97 each. I own 9 of them and I'm picking up 3 more this evening. You have to check around or have them go on their inter-store computer link and send them to you. I can't tell the difference between these and my e604's.

The e604's or the 330-3032's work best on snare and small toms but you can use them on floor toms with creative EQ'ing. I use them primarily as a stage mic set-up for live work, but they work just fine for recording also. Another person reccommended them for kick. I don't know what he was smoking or what he was hearing, but they are NO GOOD on kick. Very easily overwhelmed. I think that they are really only good for drums. I also use them for the skin side of hand drums (djembe and doumbek) and use a kick mic on the throat. I have a friend that tried to use the 330-3032's on guitar and it was terrible for him (I inherited that mic). I keep referring to the e604's andthe RadioShack mic as the same mic, because I really can't tell the difference in performance. It figures, RS discontinued it. It was the only professional mic they have ever sold. Now all they have are karaoke mics.
I like the drum clips that they come with also. They're small and easy to position and stay out of my way.

There is a difference between the e604 and the Radio Shack mic, albeit very subtle.

I have 2 of the e604's and they are great mics for toms and snare, although different sounding to an SM57.

I like them though.

The difference in sound is NOT subtle, they are similar in appearance, but the radio shacks are NOT made in germany and they dont sound as good, period.
The Sennheisers kick thier ass, IMO. If I rem correctly, mine said Made in Austria or Checkoslavakia or some shit. I know it wasnt Germany. The Radio Shack version sounds cloudy compared to the Sennheiser, and mine all sounded different while my Senns sound the same.
I paid $60 or so for all my 604's, $100 for my e609's, both of which kick RS's ass.
Just my opinion.

Nothing but good things to say about them. They are more suited to the rack toms, a bit thin on the floor tom as said before. But I used them exclusively for ALL tom work in the past with excellent results. You just need to fill out the bottom end a bit, no biggy. I tried one on my snare but prefered the ol' reliable SM57...though it would've done the job just fine. Have you taken a look at the Shure 56? Not Shure (ha) about the pricing, but they're nice as well.
