Are the new ones that are still in production just as good as the vintage ones? Do you guys think there has been any depletion in quality as they are still being produced?

and how do these compare to the SM7?

i've read around and it is said that these are awesome and are used on different things on the MD441. could you giveme a few examples of sources that each of these would be used on?

thanks!

Kick drums, toms, snare drums, woodwinds, bass, guitar cabs, you name it and it can do it. Best for items above but also a good vocal mic for thin voices or female singers.

The MD421, MD441, and SM-7 are all great mic's... I have the older MD421's... and I think that I've read somewhere that the newer MD421's are a tad brighter sounding than the older ones... but, still a good mic.

Older MD421's have copper coils, the newer (MK2) have aluminium coils.

They sound a bit hotter, but are awesome and very versatile mics.

The MKII's ain't a "tad" brighter-they're WAY brighter.
(hence the shade emoticon)

Generally not as useful on vocals, as they are prone to bring out
harshness and/or sibilance in a voice.
If you're recording to analog though, that'll help cut out some
peakiness on a 421.

The "pre-MKII's" are much smooother.
This evaluation is also shared by Scott Dorsey, and Ty Ford,
who are well regarded pro AE's.

The 421 can work just as well with singers with "full" voices.
Many famous BBC Radio artist performers have used the 421.
It was Petula Clark's main stage mic for many years,
and if you ever check out "The Concert For Bangladesh",
video footage you'll see tons of them.

You can record up to a vocal trio, with a 421 also.

Have a special spot for the 421, as it was used when submitting
yours truly's vocal "demo" many years ago, and two (separate) record producers were considering signing me to a recording contract. Although I cringe when hearing that demo today,
evidently the 421 helped to fool them as far as my abilities
at that time-pre Autotune! :D
