a friend just let me borrow these two mics. i was wondering what they are generally used on and how they "should" be placed. i'm mostly concerned with tracking guitar and drums right now.

i know there are a lot of political conversations going on; i was just hoping someone could take the opportunity to share some info on microphones for a change. haha. thanks.

Well,I don't give a shit about politics,so I will try to help you out a little.I don't have a tlm 103,so I may not be able to help you a whole lot wih that one,but I have a couple of md 421's and they are a real workhorse.I think I have recorded about anything and everything with them. The bass rolloff is real handy in tailoring the response to different instruments.Try using it for kick drum.I have always had the best luck with them one click off the bassiest position(mine have an "m" at the position with the most bass and an"s" at the least bass") about 4 inches or so straight out in front of the beater with the front head off.Move it in and out and experiment a little with the tuning etc. to taste.

sometimes I like to mic my marshall amp(100w valvestate 2x12) with one.I will set it up to where the centers of the two speakers and the mic form an equalateral triangle more or less, with the bass rolloff in the middle position.

Try this for micing the drum kit. Set up the kick mic as I described above, and put the neumann about a foot or so above the drummers head and play around with just those two on the kit.Maybe add an sm 57 on the snare and see what you get.

Good luck and have fun!

I use the TLM-103, it's great for vocals. Should work well for close micing the guitar.

The TLM 103 is great on my male voice. I tried a lot of mics before I settled on this one. It also has a great crisp sound on acoustic guitar.

I think most poeple here (politics aside) will tell you to get a 103. It's one of the best mics for the money.

If I could only keep two of my mics, those would be the ones. You can do very nice work with those, a stereo pre, and a stereo converter/ DAW. For drums, the 421 is my go to mic on the kick. I've used the TLM 103 as a mono overhead before, it works nicely, though usually I use it out in front of the kit 3-6 feet, even with the drummer's head. For bass guitar, I use the 421 on cabinets and the Neumann is nice on acoustic. On guitar, again the 421 is a standard on cabinets and the Neumann is one of my faves on acoustics, as well as a second room mic for electrics. I like both for different vocals. HTH

If you already have a dedicated kick drum mic, try the 421 on a tom. It sounds fabulous.
