Is it possible to get the major retailers like HMV to sell CDs that are home produced ( ie, without record company backing)?

I've seen chains sell some local CD's from time to time- last time I saw it, it was a complitaion of local artist that was being promoted by a radio station here- you might check with the radio stations in your town for suggestions.

I happened to notice one or two artists on MySpace who have self-produced CDs and have them on sale at HMV??

You can try to get on board with a good distributor.

Or talk to the store manager :D

A local band from here had theirs in the local HMV. I don't know if you can really expect them to include it in many more stores unless you have a large following elsewhere.

If you sign up with CD Baby, not only is your music being distributed through mainstream digital channels, but it becomes available for major retailers to pick it up to distribute it... then you just have to promote the hell out of it, tour tour tour, and contact them directly to promote it... it has to make business sense for them.
