I've been using my tascam 788 for almost 3 years now and I want to sell it and get a VF160EX. I bought the tascam with the thought of recording my own songs one track at the time but it turns out that my school needs me to record bands up to 12 tracks. It's doable on my 788 but when it comes to mixing, I get tired of bouncing tracks around. So the question is, are there any features on the tascam that I would miss if I switched to the fostex? thanks

If you need to record 12 at once, then the VF160 will do the job (and there's not much else that will!), although you'll need something like the Behringer ADA 8000 to record more than 8 at once.
As for the difference - I'm not familiar with the 788, but I think you'll find the VF up to the job.

Thanks, what about the VF160ex's sound quality. Is it really good? I'm quite satisfied by the sound quality of my 788. If you record something and after that just record over it on the same track, will the 1st one be automatically erased?

Yes it will record over it. But you can do a track exchange to keep the old one.
I think the sound quality is very good.
I also use a ADA8000 and/or an ART DPS-II so I can record more than 8 tracks at once. You can also try to find an old Fostex VC8 for 8 more inputs (1/4 only).

Thanks, I'm leaning towards the VF160 now. I want to be able to use the effects on Cubase LE or SE. What is the process that you guys go through? Do you use effects on the computer and send the files back to the Fostex or do you continue the mixing on the computer?

I do all my tracking with the VF160 and most of the mixing on the computer.

Hi, I have another quick question. Is it a good idea to just copy the wav files to a computer and edit them in wavelab, add "permanent" effects by using presets then return them to the VF160 for mixing? I just tried out my old Cubasis Go software and I decided that I won't do my mixing on the pc. It just doesn't feel right and my pc is unreliable. So is adding permanent effects saved on a wav file a good idea? Or is it better to just use the VF160 effects so I can compare different settings of effects? thanks

Personally I like to be able to vary the amount of effect in the mix, so no I wouldn't want to permanently alter the WAV file, especially because it would be done listening to the file by itself, outside the context of the song. Mix on the VF; it's more straight forward, especially if your PC is wobbly. You can always hook up outboard effects later if you want to extend the effects palette.

Thanks, have you had any trouble with the compression being only in tracks 13-16 and shutting down the EQ?

Not such much had trouble, just got used to working with it. I use an outboard compressor patched to the inserts when I record, which helps.
